I have today discovered information on a relative who emigrated to New Zealand.
Edwin Butcher (b. abt. 1841, Horsmonden, Kent) married Harriet Ann Parsons (b. abt. 1850, Chislehurst), in Chislehurst in 1871. I understand Edwin died in New Zealand.
Not much to go on I know, so apart from checking the UK census (where so far I've been singularly unsuccessful!), where do I go from here?
You could start with the marriage certificate. 1871 Q2 Bromley 2a 473 If they were in Kent then the census that year might show them locally. There is a Harriett A Parsons b c 1848 in Chislehurst with her parents in 1871. Andrea

Both 1891 and 1901 say he was born Marylebone, London and the age is consistent with a birth c1848/1849 - are you sure it is your chap who married Harriett Ann PARSONS because this doesn't look like it if your Edwin was born in Horsmonden, Kent c1841
Thank you for that. Only goes to show ya shouldn't believe everything that them wot professes to know, tells ya!
The obvious place to begin was Kent from whence this family originated, but I must have been having an aberration since I just couldn't seem to find them. As it is, people have been so kind and left so many replies to my request there, that I haven't yet had time to study them all.
As it is, it would appear that my 'informant' has done what I've come across before, taken everyone with the same name and somehow managed to make a connection where none exists. Every time this has happened the information has come from the US - I'm guessing someone there thinks Kent is so small we must all be related to one another!!
It certainly doesn't look as though my Edwin is the same as the one who married Harriet.
Thank you both for sorting that out for me - it's much appreciated. MM
