Allen of Wellingborough
« on: Monday 07 April 08 13:52 BST (UK) »

Hi there .

I have just purchased what we believe is the death certificate of our great grandfather Alfred Wood;  What I am interested in is the name on there as an official informer.
Alfred died in wellingborough Hospital Jun 30 1946, the name if the informant is given as G V Allen - son-in-law which intimates our estranged great grandfather had remarried to someone called Allen.  Anyone who may have any idea of wellingborough the address given for mr Allen is 12 Knox Road Wellingborough ; The address given for Alfred before he was hospitalised was 25 Cromwell crescent Wellingborough; Alfred was buried in an unpurchased grave in Doddington Road cemetery.  Eise

I realise that but to our knowledge this the first info we have of him remarrying as he disapearred from our lives.  I have now written to someone who i know around that area to see if they can help.  after all this was 1946, a long time ago  i am now 66 so this son in law could be in his 80's or passed on by now.  eise

Hi
I don't quite understand why you think a son in law intimates a remarriage but why don't you search the GRO for the marriage of GV Allen possibly to the daughter of Alfred Wood?

It's possible of course that there is a family circumstance which you are hesitant to disclose but there is Ancestry access online at many libraries.
Good luck

Hi there Dale,

No I should not assume that son-in-law intimates remarriage.  I have checked out bMD for a possible marriage between a fgemale wood and mr allen but now i am waiting for my cousin to go and visit Northampton to go through the records for me as i live in east yorkshire.  Thanks for you interest

Alfred was buried in an unpurchased grave in Doddington Road cemetery.  Eise

What do you mean by an unpurchased grave?

I could take a look at the cemetery if you think there might be a headstone.

Wellingborough Council Offices have the electoral rolls -maybe they'd do a 1946 look up for you of Knox Road(I've just had exactly the same scenario in Kent- informant was brother in law- but I couldn't find which of the sisters he'd married- I had three who I'd not married off)

I can't see a contact email on the W'boro council website- it directs you to the lady at Northampton. They may be very kind and do a quick look up- no harm in asking  Grin

Hi
I discovered one of mine was in an "unpurchased" grave. It simply meant, in my case, that a fellow died on Christmas Day in a strange city. I presume there was no -one around to pay for the grave -  yet he had to be buried!

One of the family paid for it when the circs were discovered - at the going rate in 1925- and then we were allowed to erect a headstone!

Don't know whether similar rules apply in the UK!
Cheers

Kia Ora Eise
Should you find a  WILLIAM ALLEN born 1867 St Johns Wood London is one of yours please let me know!
He married my Caroline FAIREY in 1892 in Wellingborough Reg District.

I have 2 children Thomas George born 1893 and Phyllis Lillian Allen 1900 both  born W'boro.
There may well have been other children but I am trying to go forward and it's very confusing until the 1911 census is available!
Cheers

Morning All

A link to "un-purchased grave" etc.

http://www.wellingborough.gov.uk/site/scripts/documents_info.php?documentID=291&pageNumber=3

http://www.wellingborough.gov.uk/site/scripts/documents.php?categoryID=162

He would have a grave number, but not likely a headstone.

To all those interested in un purchased graves;  In our case the grave has been given the number M117 - it is as one of you suggested where a grave cannot be paid for;  We have been told if we prove it is our Alfred there we could purchase the plot then erect a stone but even with the certificate we need more info.  carol is going to go to wellingborough if she gets a chance as she is close to the area.  i now live in east yorkshire which makes it difficult.

I have many conversations with Wellingborough council and registry and they have been extremely helpful;
