Hi
I was hoping that if somebody is going to the LMA soon and has a few minutes to spare would they mind looking up these two IGI entries for me?
St Matthews Bethnal Green 13/8/1801 Marriage John George Griffiths and Frances Ann Stockwell 27/12/1806 Marriage Elizabeth Griffiths and Samuel Chace
I'm almost certain that John and Elizabeth are brother and sister and I'm hoping that maybe the witness names might provide further proof.
Many thanks Lyla

Hi Dawn
Thank you so much for this I really appreciate your help. Funny thing about Samuel Ames serial witness - the name rang a bell. Turns out it was a John Samuel Ames who witnessed a couple of my Bethnal marriages (different family) in the 1850s. Like father like son probably!
I look forward to hearing about the other marriage whenever you have the time.
Thanks again!
Lyla

Hi Lyla
Samuel Chace Bachelor of this parish and Elizabeth Griffiths of the parish of St Leonards Shoreditch Spinster a minor were married in this Church by Licence this twenty seventh day of December in the year 1806 by me William Clarke Curate This marriage was solumnized between us Samuel Chace Elizabeth Griffiths In the presence of John Griffiths Barnabas Gardner Charlotte Gardner
Now as to whether they are related, I don't think so.
In the 1801 marriage John has signed with a flouncy 'J' and a capital 'G' with a loopy bottom. The double 'ff' in Griffiths is straight up and down.
In the 1806 marriage, the J is quite plain, the 'o' is different and there is no bottom loop on the capital 'G'. The double 'ff' is quite loopy.
I thinks it's unlikely his signature would change that much in 5 years, most signatures are for life.
Sorry if this isn't what you are hoping for.
Dawn
ps If I could change the font here I would, but I can't, so it's hard to describe, hope it makes sense.

Hi Dawn
Well now you might have turned up another link to connect John George to Elizabeth!
John George had a son called John Griffiths but much later in life this son John started calling himself John Gardner Griffiths. Up to now I have had no idea where the name Gardner came from and suddenly here you are giving me two witnesses with that name!
I know that Elizabeth's father was also John Griffiths because he mentions her and the Chace children in his will. John George was already dead by this time but the names of his children seem to match others mentioned in the will which is the reason why I suspected that Elizabeth and my John George might be siblings.
So it could have been her father at the wedding and not John George hence the different signatures. I do have a copy of John Griffith senior's will but I cant figure out how to copy his signature into this post. The capital G doesnt have a bottom loop and the ff's are narrow loops. Hard to explain.
Dawn you are a star, thank you so much for looking into these marriages, I really appreciate your help. You have certainly given me a brilliant new lead to think about. I hope one day I can return the favour.
Many thanks Lyla
