Q for New Englanders
« on: Tuesday 22 April 08 23:08 BST (UK) »

Is there some place that's famous for Montrealers going to get married, for some reason? Like, in 1879 or so, that far back? Can't really see it happening in Plattsburgh, y'know Grin...but maybe a hundred years ago even Plattsburgh was romantic, secluded... Grin

I absolutely cannot find a marriage in Quebec, so I thought they might have ducked across the border...

Cheers,
China

Could have gone anywhere in Ontario, New York State or Vermont if not in Quebec. May not have been a 'romantic' place they went to get married- maybe one or both of the couple were working somewhere and got married there, bride visiting friends and wedding took place there, etc. All sorts of reasons for going away for a quiet wedding.

What about Niagara Falls. It used to be a hot spot for honeymooners, maybe it still is.  Wink

Thanks for your ideas aghadowey and Kath...still nowhere, I'm afraid Tongue

I thought you might be onto something, Kath...I do remember seeing a couple of those hideous satin pillows, the kind with the flounce around the edge, and "Souvenir of Niagara Falls" painted on the front...I think they were in my grandmother's house...awful things... but, no such marriage recorded in the Ontario index on A.com Tongue

Niagara Falls is half in New York, too.  Not sure which side was the hot spot for honeymooning/getting married way back when.

The Canadian side is certainly prettier (at least now), but who knows what it was like back then.

I'd always heard the Canadian side was prettier.

I tried looking for marriages in NY state but gave up...the dates don't go to 1879, and the border crossings don't start till 1895 Cry

So I'm stuck, stuck, stuck Tongue
