Yes toni, you have remembered correctly, will have to check his name though. ( William, Francis and Thomas were the family names ... ).
Thank you for that bit of information. I hadn't heard of this and would like to know more, if possible please.

Thanks toni. I would like to know more about this, it puts a whole new perspective on the naming of the children, especially when you presume, the first one died but can't be sure.

We do have another Joseph
Joseph PRATER bap 11 Aug 1822 Cubert parents Samuel and Elizabeth father husbandman otp
Banns read Colan between Joseph PRATER of Cubert and Mary MARK otp 20, 27 Sep and 4 Oct 1846 Colan so this explains the 1846 marriage St Col District
Don't see them in 1851. On further hunting I find them in South Australia - not too far from where I live so he is not the maniac
In 1841 I note one Joseph is apprenticed to Henry Crocker carpenter and innkeeper, so that must be the Middlesex Chap I would think although the age of 15 is out. The other is a Male Servant aged 15, so he must be the son of Josiah and Elizabeth the maniac........Kris

Hi junket,
Here is the other Joseph's family - The one married to Mary Mark and emigrated to South Australia
Samuel PRATER of Peranzabuloe Lab = Elizabeth CHENOWETH otp Spinster by Banns Cubert 20 Apr 1811 Both signed with their marks witnesses John Chenoweth and William Prater
Samuel PRATER of Cubert = Catherine TRATHEN otp by Banns 3 Feb 1827 Newlyn East Both signed witnesses John Oliver and Henry Mitchell
Banns published between Samuel PRATER of Cubert and Catherine TRATHEN sojourner otp 14, 21 and 28 Jan 1827
so marriage nor Banns list him as widowed, and he signed at the second marriage. He is in Cubert with Catherine listing a birth in Crantock in Census
Cheers Kris

OK
I do however note
Elizabeth wife of Samuel PRATER husbandman was buried Cubert 18 Mar 1826 aged 39 years
so appears it is the same man
and here is Samuel's baptism so he should tie in now.
Samuel the base child of Mary PRATER was baptised 10 June 1787 Crantock
Samuel PRATER of Cubert was buried 17 Nov 1868 Cubert aged 84 years
Cheers Kris

Brilliant Kris, thank you.
Oh these Praters don't like to be neglected, for too long. I get into another line of family research and they keep popping up and sidetracking me.
I have a Mary Prater bapt 24 4 1769 ( if I read the date correctly ), dau of William And Mary ( Elvance ), Crantock, which would make her 18.
Also
Mary Prater, bapt 17 11 1770, ( if I read the date correctly ), dau of Francis and Jane ( Tippett ), Crantock, which would make her 17.

It doesn't rain but it pours junket. Your dates are correct. I didn't look earlier, so hadn't realised there were two but it this case it can be easily resolved
Mary daughter of William and Mary PRATER was buried Sep 9 1769

Whoopee, Kris, I just knew you'd sort it !! Thank you.
I'm going to put my Bullocks aside and spend some time on these neglected Praters and placate them today. ( Until I get the Prater headache ).
Now I think you said this line ended up in Australia ? ( I will have to go back and refresh ).
The Prout line you put me onto did as well.
It seems, I'm going to be searching down under soon, Kris. I will need much guidance soon. New territory for me.
junket ( who just loves this site so much )
PS .... If my records are correct, the Mary that died, was a daughter of the family with 2 Thomas sons .........................

Maybe, I now know why I get confused sometimes, ...... whilst reading back on this thread, someone has reversed their car, whilst parking in the village hall car park across from our house, in the hedge. No one was hurt, but someone got stuck inside the car, as the hedge wedged the passenger car door shut. This old lady had to be 'rescued' and then a recovery truck, had to be called to rescue car and take it away. This event has been relayed to me by OH., as I am trying to work on the Praters.
What I think is correct is ............................
Mary Prater, bapt 17 11 1770, Crantock, dau of Francis and Jane ( Tippett ), gave birth to a base child Samuel, bapt. 10 6 1787, Crantock.
Samuel m Elizabeth Chenoweth, 20 4 1811, Cubert. children born to them were ..... Samuel 10 1 1813 John 17 4 1714 Nathaniel 19 11 1811 he married Susan Herwood ( Henwood ?), 6 4 1847, Cubert Thomas 1 3 1818 William 13 2 1820 Joseph 11 8 1822 he married Mary Mark, 1846 St Columb District. Emigrated to South Australia. Martha Nicholls Prater 2 5 1824, she was buried 9 5 1824.
Elizabeth nee chenoweth, died and was buried 18 3 1826.
Samuel married again, to Elizabeth trathen, 3 2 1827, Newlyn East.
