James/Sarah Sharp
« on: Thursday 28 September 06 07:36 BST (UK) »

Hi folks,
I have James, wife Sarah and part family on both 1891 and 1901 census returns but they are all completely missing on the 1881 census.
I have tried Sharpe (with an E) as well as Sharp to no avail.
James was a Bargeman and often travelled with some family members on board from Goole into East/West Yorks via canal/rivers.

  Any ideas anyone please.

With a bit more info , we may be able to help you .....

Hi Wendy,
Yes, that is the family, thankyou.

Jeannie, James and Sarah were born at Goole, as were most of the children, there are others older that have gone by this time.
    Do you have enough info?.

I can only suspect that the name Sharp has been misquoted in 1881, how beats me.

Hi Wendy,
As sure as I can be, there was:-

     Sarah Ann b 1873 at Hook/Goole
     Lauretta  b 1875  "   "    "
     Charles   b 1877  at Barnsley.!!!!

William who is on the list was also born at Barnsley, this may give us a clue as to where they all were in 1881.

I have just digested this information from an email, a friend in New Zealand who does better than I could ever do and I have yet to include the info she gathers into my files. (what files LOL)

          Thank you for helping.

Fred

Do we know when James married Sarah?

If so do we have a maiden name?

Hi again Fred.......

I have been searching for your family , on the 1881 census, for most the week .... I hate to admit defeat !! and I will keep trying.....

But here they are in 1871......

Oaks....."Hope" 85 tons . Ardsley  (Near Barnsley ?)

James Sharp / head / age 24 / boatman / born Goole
Sarah Sharp / wife / age 25 / born Nafferton / Hufferton ?
Caroline Sharp / daughter / age 3 / born Goole

It is not much of a salve , I am afraid .......

Now ....another go at the 1881 !!

Best wishes ,

Hi Jeannie,
Thank you for your efforts and the 1871 details, I don't think I had seen that entry.

"Oaks....."Hope" 85 tons . Ardsley  (Near Barnsley ?)"

  Is this a boat/ship Jeannie?
----------------------------------------------
 Wendy,
I thought I had sent you details of James and Sarah earlier this evening but it's not showing, anyway here we are:- James Sharp married Sarah E Kay in Jly/Aug/Sept quarter 1866 at Goole.

Me 'eds buzzing after some hours of searching this evening, not getting much further but finding some obscure family members. Thats the trouble with big families and both Sanderson's Welham and Sharp had a few.!!

  Cheers, Fred

Fred

Did you only find the men at sea on the 1891 census or did you find Sarah as well with the other younger children.

If you did see the men and the older children in 1891 census is John an older son bn circa 1871 or is he a brother of James.

This is what I found just so You and I know what I am on about,

At Ravensthrope, Mirfield

John age 20 bn in Goole Bargemaster Single
Charles 13 bn in Barnsley Crew
William 12 bn in Barnsley Crew
James 40 bn in Goole Bargemaster Married
Sarah A 18 bn in Goole Crew single
L*****  15 bn in Goole  """     ""

Hello Wendy,
In the 1891 census I found two Barges at Ravensthorpe, Mirfield.
One had a John Sharp age 20 as head. Bargemaster. For crew he had Charles and William K Sharp, Was assuming that they were all brothers in our Sharp family.

Next door also on a Barge was James Sharp age 41, Head, Bargemaster with Sarah E Sharp age 18 and Lauretta age 16. That being father and two daughters.

Yes I notice that Charles and William are born at Barnsley but as we can't find them on the 1881 census we can't confirm just where the family were living.

Also I am finding it hard to know whether John is a brother or son, I can't find his birth.

Mother Sarah and younger children are elsewhere of course.

We are both on the right track as is Jeannie with her find at Ardsley, Barnsley.

Hello Fred,
its been a while since your last post on this message, but I just wondered could it be Bradley instead of Barnsley you are looking for, its just that I have Sharp's from Bradley and in tracking several of mine a few years ago now, I tracked back down a few census records with some of my branches and amongst my notes I have in the 1901 cencus  at Hook Parish Goole

Thomas Sharp  born 1861 Bradley a carpenter on Canal Quay boat
Mary A Sharp born 1862 Hook
Ethel  Sharp born 1896 Hook
Hannah  Sharp born 1897 Hook
Clifford  Sharp born 1898 Hook
John W Sharp 1900 Hook
there was also a couple of Lockwoods with them described as his sons

I believe this Thomas Sharp is the son of John Sharp and Grace of Bradley, West Yorkshire, I dont have a record of him in 1891 census but in the 1871 and 1881 he is living with his parents.
John Sharp was the brother of My GGG Grandfather William Sharp, I have no access to the census info for yours but it seems too much of a coincidence.
Let me know what you think, or give a little further information to help in the search for a possible connection.
Bye for now.

Hi Miss Maiden,  Grin

I will look into this in the very near future, for the moment I'm heading for bed, almost 2am and I hope to sleep.
    PM'd you.

Hi,
So sorry I'm late, but I did send you a PM for which I've received no answer.  Anyway I've just been trying to link up our Sharp families and I just can't.

There is surely a link somewhere but where escapes me.

I did find your 1901 census record that you mention but where is William, brother to  John, was he born after 1901, I don't think so unless he had left home by that time.
The Lockwoods you mention by the way were living next door, Sharp's at No 32 Vermyden Terrace, Lockwoods at 33. Smiley

None of the Christian names of the family ring any bells though my Sharp's were also boatmen for a large part, or Ag Labs of which there were hundreds.

Sorry I can't be more positive.

                   Cheers, Fred.
