G'day all,
I'm looking for a birth date (and anything else!) on an Annie Irwin born approximately 1865 in (what is listed on her death certificate) as Gloucester, England. Her parents are listed as James Irwin and Anne McCrea.
Any information on a marriage between James Irwin and Anne McCrea would also be mightily appreciated!
Any helpers?
Cheers

Might be an idea to have a look at the Stroud parishes via http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~hughwallis/IGIBatchNumbers/CountryEngland.htm where you might find some earlier references to the families named.
If you've just started on U.K. research, have a look in http://www.genuki.org.uk/org/ where you'll find lots of info, guidance and links.
What's the earliest date you have regarding Stroud? I have quite a lot of stuff.
And of course, there's always freebmd - Google will find it.
Chas
Free bmd (q.v.) gives three birth registrations for Ann - 1853, 1858 and 1865 - bear in mind women often claim to be younger than they are!!!

Freebmd gives the only Ann McCrea birth registration who could have perhaps been Ann's mother as registered in Liverpool.
With a name like McCrea and birth place Liverpool, there's a good chance she was of Irish extraction. If she is from the family you seek and they were of the R.C. persuasion, tracing back in church records will be difficult because the LDS are often not allowed to film R.C. records.
Good luck.

I've done some more searching and sad to say that in the 1871 census, although I found an Ann Irwin d.o. James (51) and Ann (47), she was 15 born in Ireland whilst her parents were born in Cumberland and the census was Sheffield's. Ann McCrea's parents in Ireland?
There does not appear to be any Ann born in GLS (Chapman code) - You'll find the code in Parloc get it from http://www.parloc.pwp.blueyonder.co.uk/parlocdl.html it's very useful.
There are many Ann/Anne/Annie Irwins in the various UK censuses some have James as father and Mary as mother. Ireland features fairly often in birthplaces of Irwins.
I really think you need a bit more information (e.g. Annie's siblings); for the problem with d-certs is that the subject does not give its details, cannot be asked questions relating to its accuracy so it is completed using hearsay. If you can find no more info. you have a real problem in which case it would be best perhaps to get a subscription to Ancestry so as to be able to search all census details yourself. Freebmd (I transcribed about 18,000 of its handwritten entries quite a few years ago) is useful (its search engine is good) but may not be as complete as the data on Ancestry.
Regards
Chas

Chas,
Thank you for your patience and searching. So true it is that 'you' are not 'there' to give your own details at the signing of the death certificate. Further research is indeed necessary!
Once again I appreciate your time and effort.
18 000! You must have met a lot of relatives in those transcriptions! And if not yours, well...
Cheers
