Donovans in Salford
« on: Wednesday 23 April 08 11:55 BST (UK) »

Can anyone help me find the birth of John Donovan in Manchester.  The family lived in the Salford area, John married Amelia nee Evans, children were  William H, John, Alfred, Joseph, Thomas, Maggie, Mary and Helen.  John was a steeplejack per 1891 census and also 1901.  There were many born circa 1848 but am trying to track him down, his fathers name was also John.  Would be grateful for any info whatsoever. Thanks

Hi

All the Donovans that fit that I can see in 1861 seem to be born in Ireland, not Lancashire.

But how about RG9/ 3026?

John & Mary Donothan, 49 & 48?

Both silk weavers, both born Middleton with children John & Mary, 15 & 17, both factory hands born Middleton?

Best wishes

Hi Again,

Cannot find John in 1851

In the 1855 Directory there is only one John Donovan listed, a labourer, living at 31 Every St, Ancoats, this maybe the John the father. I have no access to the 1851 for Ancoats, but maybe somebody will see this and check on Ancestry.

Good Luck

Thanks Bursy, I have been looking for this man for years, and short of applying for all births in Manchester not sure what to do next.  There are 6 births between 1840 and 1852 in the manchester area!! Even if I do the best I can hope for is to narrow the search a litte.  I have found the marriage to Amelia the spelling was Donniving! and neither could write their name so Im sure were looking a spelling variants.  On the marriage cert Johns father is also John and his occupation is a Labourer the marriage was 1867.  Always grateful for any help with this one, thanks again Bursy

Hi Inchamore

I've been looking back over this.  Is the marriage to Amelia a second marriage?  Do you know the date of their marriage?

I looked at 1891, and Amelia is only 31 but the oldest child William is 22.  There's also a five year gap before John - easily explained, but it made me look closer.

In fact she could barely have been John's mother.

[Entry on link above and search is:

John Donovan 43, and wife Amelia, 31,
William son 22, John son 17,
Alfred 15, Thomas 12,
Mary 3.

All born Lancashire, Salford.

Have they married between Thomas and Mary?

Best wishes

Emms

Modified: Ah, error, she was 31 in 1881, too!  but the rest of the entry may be a bit off, too!  I'm not deleating it.  Someone will have seen it and say so!

Hi Emms, yes I though the same thing re the age but then realised it must be a mistake.  I have the marriage as 1867 to Amelia Evans but as I said the spelling of the name Donovan was Donniving, I was working on the assumption this was the right one.  What do you think?  the family carried on living in the same area until my grandfather Joseph was born in 1896, so Im hoping Im on the right trail. Undecided

Hi Inchamore and Dave

Thank you for the extra info.

I've been trying to follow through the Every street entry.  I've not found him so far, but Ancestry has stopped puttiing up images again.

I'll have another go some time.

Best wishes
