Hello,
My husband's 4xgreat grandfather was James Coppins who according to the 1851 census was born approx 1783 in Lenham, Kent. He was married to an Elizabeth. (I only know she was born approx 1786 in Borden)
As usual with the Coppins' there is a query.
From the 1861 census there was also another James Coppins born approx 1783 Lenham. He was married to Rebecca. In the 1851 census it just states he was born in Kent.
According to other genealogy websites (which I am not sure are proven or not) Thomas Coppins and Sarah Earl had a son James born 1783 Lenham.
How do I find out if that is my James' parents or the
other James'?
Is there anyone out there who has access to the Lenham parish records who could help me.
Thomas and Sarah also had a daughter called Mercy. My James also named his daughter Mercy and in fact it goes down through the generations with various siblings, cousins etc. Unfortunately the other James and Rebecca don't have any children with them on their census' so I can't see if there is any link with family names etc.
Any advice would be gratefully received.

I've got Lenham Baptisms 1558-1960
There's no Baptism for a James COPPINS around 1783.
However, there's a Baptism for a James COPPENS, son of Thomas & Sarah, 30th March 1783.
There's quite a few Coppins baptisms, so I'll double-check after lunch 
I've also got Borden marriages, but there's nothing for a James Coppins (or variants) marrying an Elizabeth.

I've looked at COPPEN, COPPENS, COPPIN & COPPINS.
There's no other Baptism for a James in Lenham.
Possibly your Mercy's Baptism:
12th March 1780 Mercy d of Thos. & Sarah COPPEN
Born 11th Feb.
There are other children for a Thomas & Sarah, yell if you would like the details.
