My great grandparents were Hugh Goldie (pro footballer with Celtic in 1880s-90s) and Grace McGinn.
They had several children one of whom was Robert who was aged 15 when he died in Aldershot after signing up with the Seaforth Highlanders in 1914.
According to the Kilmarnock standard of the time a huge funeral cortege took olace from his home in Crookedholm to his final resting place with full military honours at Kilmarnock Cem.
I am looking for pictures of this event as he was the first WW1 soldier to be buried in the town.
I am also trying to trace Hugh Goldie's own parents as when he was born in 1872 his parents left him with a relative his uncle John Goldie as they left to go to AMERICA. I believe my great grandfathers perents were HUGH GOLDIE and an ANNIE GOLDIE (nee GOLDIE). I also believe they went to OHIO in the USA.
Can anyone assist.

Hi RG
Welcome to Rootschat
I'm no help with the photos but Hugh's birth certificate shows that he was born on 16 February 1872 in Kilmaurs District, Ayrshire. His parents were Alexander Goldie and Mary, m.s. Smith. They married on 20 June 1865, Kilmarnock. I'm having trouble reading his father's occupation and will put it up shortly.

That was quick............ I have Hugh Goldie born on 6 March 1872 in Kilmarnock...........BUT I could be wrong. His death cert states he died on the 1st Sept 1935 in Armour Street Kilmarnock. It gives his mothers name as ANNIE Goldie. However in the wedding cert it gives his parents as Hugh Goldie and Annie Goldie(nee Goldie)

The only other ones in 1872 was born 25th April. Parents Allan Goldie and Elizabeth Smith and 27 December to Hugh Goldie and Grace Findlay and one who died in 1942.
None showing on familysearch with parents Hugh and Ann(ie)
Do you think he gave his grandparents' names as he was brought up by his Uncle.
I'll have a check on his uncle and find what his brothers names where.

Alexander and Mary Goldie are still there on the 1881 census and no sign of any other Hugh(ie) with a John.
When did the parents leave and where did John live?

Hi again
I've just checked my Professional Footballers book and in it it says that Hugh Goldie was born 10th February 1874, Dalry.
I'll base my searches on this date and see what i come up with.

The best that i can come up with on the 1891 census is this:
Mauchline Road, Hurlford, Riccarton
John Goldie, 30, coal miner, b. Kilmarnock Agnes, 28, b. Galeton Grace, 7, b. Riccarton Andrew, 6, b. Kilmarnock maggie, 4, b. Riccarton Hugh Goldie, boarder, 19, coal miner, b. Riccarton

This John Goldie married Agnes McGinn in 1882. His parents were Andrew Goldie and Margaret Bain.
Familysearch has John born Kilmarnock 15 May 1860
Parents - Andrew Goldie and Margaret Bain
Siblings: 2 May 1856 - James 16 March 1858 - Janet 22 May 1862 - Margaret 15 May 1864 - Andrew Williamson 19 July 1865 - Francis Bain

I think the 1891 is the same Hugh as on the 1901when he is married to Grace and has 5 children, including 7 year old twins and Robert aged 4. Living Kilmarnock Road, Hurlford. Occupation - Professional Footballer.

To confuse the issue, there is also an Annie Goldie, b.c. 1854 Hurlford on the 1871 census. She is a domestic servant in the Maconnochie household, 2 Market Street, Kilmarnock.
I can't see a relationship between John and this Annie though

I've also checked the US censuses - 1880 and 1890. No Hugh Goldie or Annie Goldie b. Scotland.

Below is info from the 1851 census - Im tracking Goldie as relatives of the Smarts. The Goldies' below had a son Hugh DOB unknown but after 1851 and before 1861 unknown. I would be interested to know if this line of Goldies ties in with any of the others mentioned. The Goldies' moved to Dalry at some point as per Census of 1861
Hugh Goldie Census 1851 30/03/51 Age 25 DOB: Where born: Lanark Address: 22 Portland Row Hurlford, North Ayrshire Occupation: Coal Miner
