Is it still around???

In the 1891 & 1901 census an ancestor of mine appears to have taken over the running of his father in law's nursery.

The address given on both census is "The Nurseries" Ashburnham R.d
St. Paul Bedford.

I've 'googled' all the garden centres & nurseries i can find for Bedfordshire but can't find anything in Ashburnham R.d

I came across an interesting article about some Midwife Toads that were apparently in some plants shipped from France & delivered to a nursery in Ashburnam R.d. circa 1906. A couple of local boys asked for some of the toads for their garden and the toads started to colonise and spread all over North Bedford.

I haven't yet verified my relatives, am in the process of getting certs. but when i do, i'd love to add the story about the toads I just wondered if the nursey was still around?

Hello Poli, Ashburnham Road, Bedford still exists - but there are no nurseries there, unless 'The Nurseries' was the name of the property. There is no such property listed in the 1936 & 1940 Kellys directories I have. If you can tell me the family name, I will see if they are listed. Regards John

1871--Thomas Horton is 'Nurseryman' at an address 'The Ship' Bronham R.d

1881 His widow Elizabeth is 'Florist' with my relative Frederick Smart [son in law]as nurseryman. Address 124 Bronham R'd

1891 Elizabeth [widow] as 'Florist' Frederick Smart , son in law as Nurseryman. Address is now 'The Nurseries' Ashburnham R.d

1901 Frederick now down as Nurseryman--employer. Address The Nurseries etc.

p.s if it was an old type nursey, it's p[robably been knocked down to make way for a block of flats
and there was i hoping to get a few cut price p[lants!!

Kellys 1936 & 1940 - lists under Nurserymen & Seedsmen; Horton & Smart at 26 Harpur Street, Bedford

Kellys 1949 at 26 Harpur Street has Horton & Smart, Florists (B Wise propr.)

John, thank you for the info re Kelly's directories.

I'd heard of them before on this site but didn't, until today, realise i could see them on the internet. !!

Have found a lot of 'Smart' listings in Bedfordshire. I'll enjoy finding out if any more of them are related.
