Brownett in 1871
« on: Wednesday 23 April 08 14:13 BST (UK) »

Hi there Smiley

Could someone please look me up the Brownett family in Cheltenham in 1871?
Emily Kate would have been about 9 years old and her mother was a Catherine, born in Thornbury. She was a widow in 1881 so I'm looking for Emily's fathers name and birthplace.

According to The Bristol & Glos Archaeological Society Gazetteer http://www.cheltgaz.ukpc.net/index.shtml there are two possibilities for Clare Cottages (Portman Place still exists):

Clare Cottages (1), Bath Road. 4 houses on east side, south of Clare Terrace, i.e. present nos. 166-72 Bath Road. 2 listed 1841 Census, 1844 directory; 4 shown on 1855-7 Old Town Survey. Nos. 5-8 (now 174-84 Bath Road) appear to be slightly later.

Clare Cottages (2), Clare Place. Some 3 cottages shown on 1855-7 OT , at angle with Kew Place. 6 cottages listed 1872. Nos. 1-3 listed in 1936 slum clearance schedule (Housing Committee, Oct.). Apparently also known as Clare Villa Cottages (e.g. 1866, 1876 directories). Corner house still called Clare Cottage.

Oh thank you for those gazetteer listings. I'm hoping to get an old map soon for the Cheltenham area and that will be very helpful.  Grin

Oh and thanks to your great help I was able to find Catherine's marriage and thus her maiden name which was Shea...

which lead me to her Shea parents(John and MaryAnn) in Thornbury, who were from Ireland...which is totally exciting! A few years ago my great aunt told her son that her parents were from Ireland but they werent...it was her greatgrandparents instead...

only problem is on the 1871 Thornbury census I found online, it gave the Irish birthplace as carrick - on -...  And my mum said there was a couple carricks. lol

Hurrah!  Cheesy

That's looking like Carrick-on-Suir, which seems to be County Tipperary (but don;t take my word for it!)

Try posting on the Tipperary board, but hold your breath as you have so little information.  They usually need townlands and inside leg measurements and allsorts!  Roll Eyes Grin

Have you looked on www.Scribes-Alcove.co.uk for Thornbury baptisms etc?  Edit: parents' deaths are on there (1871 John & 1874 Maryann)

1861 has them also at Mutton Lane, Thornbury - born Tipperary!

RG9/1748/31/14

Just the two of them - he's a journeyman tailor (and not so deaf!)

Wink

Same place in 1851 with dau Emma at home.  Around the corner in Horseshoe Lane in 1841, additional children Mary Ann & Catherine.  Give a shout if you need details.

One of many little helpers is all!

Carrick on Suir is in the county of Tipperary - the boards on Rootschat are divided by county as you probably know.

Having said that, I have also seen it referred to as being in Waterford, so I would post on Tipperary and ask the experts for clarification.

Did you have a look at Scribes Alcove?  Quite a few records for you there, including an older son Thomas baptised in Berkeley.

(I got carried away and found a very distant relative of my own - of the Scottish persuasion - getting married in the same church as me - she even shared my name!!)

Kind regards, Arranroots  Wink

Yes I searched through Scribe's Alcove...what a great site!
Except I didnt see that Thomas you mentioned.  Huh
I saw a John Shea who was baptised and buried in 1833 in Thornbury, and two burials in Berkeley for a James and a John...

Grin That's great that you found a distant cousin! How funny is that!

Anyways off to try my luck on the Tipperary board...seems like I'll have to do a lot of research in the Irish geography. Wink
