Miller family of Grantham
« on: Wednesday 23 April 08 15:55 BST (UK) »

Hi all,

New member Dusty49 here, so please excuse any wrong terminology.

I've gone though my Miller family tree back to the 1841 census and am wondering whether anyone might be researching the same family .....

John Miller (b.1816) a builder and his wife Elizabeth Miller (b.1821) living in Broad Street, Grantham.

Over the years, they had seven children:-

Julia (b.1843)
Elizabeth (b.1845)
John (b.1848)
Sarah (b.1850)
Harriet (b.1854)
William (b.1856)
Samuel Charles (b.1860)

I have located the joint grave of John and Elizabeth in Grantham cemetery and have found various references to John in Grantham Library as he later became a Master Builder / Monumental Mason.

Is there anyone using these boards who might have more information about my family please ?

If so, thanks in advance for your help.

I guess John MILLER was bap at Grantham Methodist Chapel in 1815, son of William and Hannah.

The same couple had several kids bap at Grantham (CofE) ... you will find them living in New St in 1841 ... look for Will Miller in Lincs ... there is only one.   William MILLER shows as a Builder aged 67 in 1851 (same address) - he was born in Northants  and his wife in Derbys.

The IGI has a marriage at Dale Abbey (Derbys) in 1811 William MILLER to Hannah BROOKHOUSE ... this seems quite similar to Hannah's stated birthplace in the 1851 census (Hale Abby)

Hi Dusty

I am not researching the Miller family but saw you were looking for info on Miller family Grantham so as I was in Grantham library today I looked in St Wulframs parish records and found the following baptisms of John and Elizabeth Millers children.

14th July 1842  Julia
7  th Jun  1844  Elizabeth Charlotte
28th Dec  1845  Sarah Ann
11th Oct   1847 John Henry
10th Feb  1856  William George

Also found  18th Oct  1841  William Henry son of Joseph & Mary Miller .Joseph was a Tailor.

And 20th Aug  1854  John  son of Abel & Mary Miller. Abel was a chair maker.

I only had time to check between 1841-1859 but if you want I can check before that and also have a look for the marriage of John & Elizabeth.

I will be back in the library next weekend and will let you know what I find

Hi Kathy,

Once again, very many thanks for your help.

I wasn't aware of infant Samuel and am trying to work out the connection, if any.

Have now found out that the Miller business was next door to M. Thatcher's shop and that the family lived in Broad Street, New Street, Albion Terrace and lastly, Sydney Street.

Once again, many thanks.
