Barking up the trees

Belle Vue Road
« on: Wednesday 23 April 08 17:53 BST (UK) »

Hi all, Grin
I am looking for two houses on Belle Vue Road.

My gt grandfather -Charles Anslow was born 15th september 1881 at 113 Belle Vue Road. 1n 1891 and 1901 he is  living at this address with his uncle and Aunt the Coopers and in 1910,  21 june, his daughter(my grandmother)  Constance Elizabeth Anslow was born at 93 Belle Vue Road.

On the Shrewsbury and Atcham borough council map I can find number 93A...would this be my grans house?

However the nearest I can find for number 113..are 111 and 115, which is now the Belle Vue Tavern. Could it be that the two houses are one and the same, due to number changes over the years?

My gt gdad worked on the railway, as did his uncle Thomas Cooper.

If anyone could help me it would be great.

Gillian

Hi Pete, Smiley

Thanks so much for the offer. I have several requests Grin

My gdmother was Fanny Edwards b 1885. She married Charles Anslow in 1904. According to my findings, Fanny is daughter of John Edwards b. 17 dec 1848, Wrockwardine, Shrop, who is son of Thomas Edwards -gardener- b 12 july 1812 Marsh Green, Longdon upon terne, son of Richard and Sarah. I have the relative census info for these peope, and marriages, births etc and it all seems to fit in, but before Richard  I'm stuck Undecided  If you know anything I'd love to hear from you.

As for pics or street information:o Shocked

In 1881 the census for John Edwards and his family is 1 Court/2 Mardol, Shrewsbury. Have you heard of this 'court' off Mardol?

In 1891 the Edwards are living at and running the "Old Wherry" at 55 Wyle Cop. I know it doesn't exist anymore but a pic of what is there now would be lovely.

And then of course 93/113 Belle Vue Road... Grin Grin

Hope I haven't abused your offer....and don't worry if you can't help.

Thanks, Gillian

No problem Gillian Smiley Smiley

We are all here to help one another Smiley

Do you mean this Thomas.

Longdon-upon-tern Parish Registers

12 Jul 1812 Thomas, s. of Richard Edwards, of the Marsh Green bap.

28 Jun 1807 Sarah, d. of Richard Edwards, of the Marsh Green bap

11 Feb 1810 Richard, s. of Richard & Sarah Edwards, of the Marsh Green bap.

Have you got Richards details, ?   Where was he born? ect,

I can see over 200 Richard Edwards here Grin Grin

Hi Pete and Thank you Smiley

Yes, that's my Thomas and his siblings.

The only thing I have on Richard, their father, is that he was born abt 1781, Longdon Upon Terne..this appears in the LDS records.

When I had access to ancestry I couldn't pin point either Richard 1781 or Thomas 1812  in the 1841 census.

In 1851 I have the following:
Sugden, Roddington
Thomas Edwards b. 1812 - gardener -Marsh Green
Ann (nee Doley) b. 1812- Besford Wood (b. 8 aug 1814, Shawbury)
Sarah b 1846-imbecile- Withington
John b. 1849 - Rushmore
Samuel b. 1851 - Sugden

Does this help with the 200 Richards? Undecided

Thank you for the link Cheesy Gillian

Hi Gillian Smiley Smiley

Im struggling here, I can see the Richard you want on the I.G.I. but this entry is  submitted by a member, these should be taking with a pinch of salt,  I have the Longdon upon tern records and there is no sign of him.  I have gone through the Richards in the Litchfield diocese, ( which is were we are ), and the nearest I can find to a dob of 1780 is.

Register de Ruiton.

13 May 1782 Richard, s. of Nathaniel & Lidia Edwards bap.

I dont really think this is your Richard though as the names dont run through, The I.G.I. has a record of a marriage

RICHD. EDWARDS

Spouse:  SARAH WILDING
Marriage:  12 APR 1798   Saint Julian, Shrewsbury, Shropshire, England

Do you know Sarahs maiden name?, ( great fun searching the Edwards name here in South Shropshire )

I have found out where the old wherry was and I will get a pic to you next time im walking past,

Will look into the other dioceses to try and find your Richard.

Best wishes

Thanks Pete Cheesy

Sorry, I don't have a maiden name for Sarah....and the only other marriage that fits in Shropshire is in 1808 to Sarah Beddoes...but this is one year after his daughter Sarah was born...so probably not. Cry

Think I'll have to post a look up for Thomas..and see if I can get more info. from that.

Thank you for all your help,  Cheesy Gillian

Hi Gillian

I've just found this site after looking up information about the Old Wherry in Shrewsbury - I can't PM you yet as I'm so new - so I hope you find this rather late post.

My father is the last surviving son of Henry Edwards who ran the Old Wherry in Shrewsbury in the early 1900's. He has been talking about it recently - hence my search.

Would you like some more information? I have some photos of Henry Edwards and Dad has a few stories about the family.

Hi Lynn, Grin Grin

I would love any information on the Edwards family. My ggran was Fanny Edwards b. 1885 Atcham, in 1891 she was living with the family at the Old Wherry. She married (Charlews Anslow) but according to the family her elder sisters , Emma and Edith, ran the pub in later years, and my Gran, Constance Elizabeth Anslow helped out now and then.

Maybe you can help on a very alarming family rumour...that one of the Edwards sisters died in a vat of beer?? Shocked Shocked

Looking forward to anything you can tell me...good or bad!! Cheers, Gillian

Hi again

As far as I know, the two elder sisters ran the pub until Henry was 21, then he took over and they left. I think that was about 1904. I hadn't heard about the vat of beer death rumour, but I'll ask Dad this evening. Sounds interesting!

I'll check up on some names and dates and get back to you - it may take a few days.
