Does anyone know the origin of the christian name Xenophon. It appears in each generation of the 19th century Smith line I'm researching. Would the shortened version be Ino??
Kind regards
Jim

Thanks Trystan
Very interesting. Two names that have got the family stumped as to why they were used. The odd thing about the name Ino though is in the 1871 census for Aldeburgh Ino Smith is noted as being a son. Mmmmm.
Kind regards
Jim

Out of curiosity while searching for births in FamilySearch this evening I typed in Ino Smith, the return was a very long list of John Smiths. I then went to another site typed in the same and again a very long list of John Smiths. So, for some reason Ino is a nickname for John

Good grief It would appear that the census I first found Ino in had been wrongly transcribed it should have been Jno, which, according to this site - http://freereg.rootsweb.com/howto/realnames - is an abbreviation of John. Wouldn't the Enumerator been just as quick to have written John
