1901 England census for Northumberland- All Saints has District HM Prison giving a list of inmates and staff. It was situated in Carloil Square in central Newcastle.

The local record office will have them if they exist. Try looking at www.genuki.org to get the web site adress for them. Their catalogue may be online. Genuki has lots of other interesting information too. Andrea

I was looking through Rootschat and found your reply to another subscriber re Prison Records, you quoted a website for www.genuki.org, I tried to get onto the site, only to have it come up with www.genuki.net, when I go into genuki.uk.org, I can't find where I can go to find the Prison Reocrds. Nt reason is I know my gr grandfather was in an Asylum in carloil Sq in 1891 but have not been able to find anything on him after that. His name was William Hall. Bev

Thank you for replying to my query. My gr grandfather was born in 1846, so would have been about 55 in 1901, and because he had such a common name, it would be nearly impossible to find the right death if he had died. Bev

The Borough Lunatic Asylum for Newcastle around 1900 was at Coxlodge which is in Gosforth, then outside the town, perhaps a smaller target for a search. Carloil Square at that time, apart from the County Prison, contained numerous lodging houses.
