Cornelius Tyte 1815-1891
|
Does anyone have access to and would be willing to help me with a look up in the Barnstaple Parish Register?
I am trying to find a link between the Tyte and Gaydon families, from census records both families were in similar professions - Silversmiths or Grocers.
George Tyte Gaydon was born c1816/17 Barnstaple and I am trying to find his parents and mothers maiden name (hopefully Tyte!) with the aim to link in this Tyte branch to my main line of Tytes in Wookey/Wells Somerset.
George married an Elizabeth in c1837 Barnstaple and they had one known son John in 1843.
Any info or advice would be really appreciated
Regards
Eve

Hi Eve
Called into the North Devon RO in Barnstaple, where they have transcripts of some local PRs. In Barnstaple PR found the following:
Baptisms
1806 25 May Thomas Hooper Gaydon, s of John & Mary 1808 15 May Frances Hooper Gaydon, d of John & Mary 1811 7 March John Hooper Gaydon, s of John & Mary *1813 26 March Robert Gaydon, s of John & Mary *1816 11 March Geo. Tyte Gaydon, s of John & Mary
I checked up to 1820, but could find no further baptisms for this family, although there are other Gaydons, & Tyte families there. The two asterisked entries had the further information: Father's occupation: Carpenter, of Joy Street, Barnstaple.
I checked the marriage Register transcription, but could not find an entry for John Gaydon (it is indexed, so checked that back to early 18th Century). I also checked some of the nearby Parishes, but no joy on a marriage either. It looks as if Mary's name could have been Hooper though - Tyte possibly a grandparent or god-parent?

Hello again Eve
I've just checked the IGI & found:
Barnstaple Marriages
John Gaydon & Mary Hooper 23 July 1797.
Maybe I missed this in the index - I'll check again for you. Strange gap between the marriage & the first child - possibly they moved away & had other children elewhere? When I next visit the NDRO I'll check again & look for possible baptisms for John & Mary. I should emphasize that these are transcriptions & not the originals

Hi Steve
Thanks very much for taking the time to search for me, it does look as though Mary's name was Hooper and not Tyte -unfortunately
Your theory re Tyte being a grandparent/god parent maybe my only hope, and I've just spotted an entry in Family Search Pedigree Resource File for Mary Hooper parents John Hooper/Mary Scott, so not on his mothers side.
If you could look for a baptism for John next time you visit the NDRO I would be extremely grateful.
Thanks once again - it really is appreciated
Kind Regards
Eve Nottingham

Hi Eve
I found the Hooper/Scott marriage you mention (4th June 1769) - daughter Mary bap 23 Aug 1775.
Baptism of John Gaydon is not so obvious - there is a John Gaydon, son of Mr John Gaydon jnr. & Mrs Elizabeth (nee Moule) on 1st May 1737 - but this seems a generation too early. Gaydon is an old Barnstaple name (including some Mayors) - in fact there was a pub called The Gaydons in the town.
Interestingly I found a marriage:
31 August 1794: George Tyte & Elizabeth Hooper
This could be a sister of Mary - there does not appear to be any baptisms for this family (they may have moved away of course) - possibly your George was named for a godparent?

Hi Steve
Thanks ever so much for looking, seem to think your theory is probably the most likely as there doesn't appear to be the obvious link that I was looking for. I might well have to put this on the back burner, gather my thoughts and try another tack.
Thanks once again for all your help and info.
Kind Regards
Eve
