REEVE family Avebury?
« on: Thursday 24 April 08 06:38 BST (UK) »

My 3x great grandmother was Mary Reeve born c 1780.  On the 1851 and 1861 censuses her birthplace is record as "Wiltshire,  Abre".  I am wondering if this was an abbreviation for Avebury.

Does anyone have access to parish registers of Avebury who could help me please.

Mary

Where was she living in 1851?   By the same token it could have been an abbreviation for Amesbury.   I have located a few Mary Reeves in my copy of the census but no Mary Reeve.

Hi Dave

Mary Reeve married an Emmanuel Lapping in 1808 in Bristol and I have her under her married name in 1841 and 1851 in Pill, Somerset and in 1861 in Newport with her daughter, Mary Atwell.  I think she died there in the June Quarter of 1861.

Her birth varies on censuses from 1779 - 1781 and I found on the LDS site a Mary Reeve baptised 1781 at Avebury daughter of William Reeves and Ann Pickett.  That is why I thought Abre might be an abbreviation of Avebury.

I don't know how (or if) I can confirm this was the same Mary Reeve

Mary

Hi Mary,

I guess the only answer is to look at parish records as you suggested in the first place.   I couldn't find her in Wiltshire in 1851 because obviously she lived in Pill.   I was hoping if she was in Wiltshire in 1851 my transcription of the census may have shown her place of birth more clearly.

Unfortunately I'm unable to go to the record office at present because as from Monday I'm away until mid June.   If you haven't had a result by then give me a nudge and I'll have a look at Avebury PRs.

Cheers Dave

Hi Dave

Thanks for the message. I now have confirmation that Abre was the Wiltshire accent for Avebury so this is where Mary was born.

Do you know if marriage certificates in 1808 showed the name of parents?  I am thinking that this is how I can tie her in for sure with the family at Avebury I found on the LDS site.

Regards
Mary
