I've been trying to find a christening record for Maria WOODWARD born circa 1800 at Balsall for quite some time now. Others who have been born at Balsall at that time were christened at Hampton in Arden, but there are no entries that fit. The only WOODWARD entries are for the children of Isaac and Elizabeth, between 1783 and 1798.
Maria married Jacob Ellis in 1839. The 1841 Census lists her birthplace as WAR, and age as 35. The 1861 Census lists her birthplace as Balsall, and age as 60.
I have her marriage certificate and it does not record who her father was, however, her first son is named Isaac. The name does not appear in her husband's family. I have a strong suspicion that Maria is the granddaughter of Isaac and Elizabeth (most likely from their eldest daughter Mary).
Would there be any documents that may help to support or refute this theory? I have not been able to trace Mary (her possible mother) forward.
Any advice would be most welcome.

I had seen the Mancetter christening and dismissed it as unlikely because it was too far away and there was a father named.
I suppose that not listing a father on the marriage doesn't necessarily mean that she didn't know his name; and Mary and Maria were considered the same name to some extent. I think that before I can rule this one out, I'll have to see if I can trace this Mary forwards.
Unfortunately English marriage certificates don't name the bride or grooms mother - only the father and his occupation. They will sometimes note that the father is deceased, but the absence of the word "deceased" doesn't necessarily mean that he was alive at the time of the marriage.
This wouldn't be much of a hobby if it were too easy
