In 1881 at Old Vicarage, Kempley, Glos the Smallman family consisted of:
James Smallman age 45 b Upton Bishop, Herefordshire, so b c1836 Ann wife age 44 b Whitminster, Glos, so b c1837 John.G.Drinkwater grandson age 8 b Kempley, Glos Elizabeth Smallman age 70 Mum b Upton Bishop.
I think James MAY have been married to an Ellen at some stage althogh not 100% certain.
I DO know he had a son, George Smallman b c1857 Upton bishop, Herefordshire. I have details on who he married and his children etc.
What I'd like is to find out who was the mum of John.G.Drinkwater....if he was James Smallman's grandson then James must have had a daughter who married a Mr Drinkwater.
Can anyone find James and family in the 1861/1871 census to see if he had any more children other than George.
It would be great to be able to solve this one! Beverley

If you are sure James had a son George, then you may not have the right family in 1881, as James doesn't seem to have other children.
Could this be your George in 1881? RG11/2584 Folio 67 Page 24 Crowhill, Upton Bishop, Herefordshire SMALLMAN John Head Mar 71 Shoemaker Master Upton Bishop Ann Wife Mar 61 " Wife Little Marcle Dewchurch George Grand Son S 24 Solicitors Manageing Clerk Upton Bishop
1881, parents James and Ellen: at RG11/2602 Folio 104 Page 9
and 1871 RG10/2722 fol. p.20 Broxwood Green, Pembridge, Herefordshire SMALLMAN James head m 38 Shoemaker Ross Ellen wife m 40 Shoemakers wife St. Margaret George son 14 Scholar Crowhill Arthur " 12 " " Henry " 10 " Yatton Mary Ann dau 8 " Crowhill William son 6 " Sarnsefield Charles " 5 " " Thomas " 3 " " Christopher " 1 " Pembridge
Do you have George's birth cert from 1857 to be sure of his parents' names?

Hi Barbara - I think you have found the most likely family
Think you are correct about George (although listed as son) being grandson in 1861
1851 shows Crowhill Village Upton Bishop John Smallman head M 41 Shoemaker Upton Bishop Elizabeth wife 39 Dressmaker Ross JAMES son U 19 Shoemaker Ross
next door but one (may be James' grandparents? ?) John Smallman Head M 83 Shoemaker Mary wife 77
HO107 1976 83 9
and 1841 Crowhill John Smallman 30 shoemaker Elizabeth 25 JAMES 9 mary 7 William Davies 35 ag lab all b in county HO107 421 24 4
