I am trying to get further back than my 2x great grandfather, William Shaw, born c1809, Kells Parish.
From 1841 Census to his death in 1886 he has lived at Gatehouse of Fleet. His death certificate gives his parents as John Shaw and Sarah Sloan, but I cannot trace his parents. He was married at Urr Parish in 1837. I've tried surrounding parishes without luck.
Any help is appreciated.

I might have something on him - I'm sure a William Shaw is mentioned in my 3 x grt Grandfather's letters - I'll get back to you if I find anything relevant.

Before I delve into my bits and pieces, I'm wondering if this might be him - different mother's name but this can happen if the informant at death had inaccurate info:
bpt 3 Oct 1811 William Shaw, Balmaclellan (just across the bridge from Kells old kirk) . Parents - John Shaw and Janet Wilson

Added - however there was a Jean Sloan bpt. Kells, 15 Sept 1780. Parents - William Sloan and Mary Gordon

Thanks Gadget, William married a Margaret Watt at Urr Parish in 1837. Their first born was John, born 9 April 1837, chr. 29 Jan 1838 at Urr. Sarah was born 4 Jan 1839, chr. 26 May 1839, followed by Jessie, 1840 at Anwoth, William 1842, Anwoth, plus another 5 children, all born Anwoth/Girthon Parishes. John was my G Grandfather.

The William Shaw mentioned in the letters was 'of Drumrash' which is in Balmaclellan parish. There is also a William Shaw, b.c. 1811 in the Balmaclellan censuses so it must be a different one from yours.
I've looked through the censuses and, apart from 1861, he is consistent with his place of birth. I've checked the MIS for Kells, Balmaclellan, Girthon and Anworth but can't see any mention of his parents - not surprising as my ag labs/tenant farmers only produced one headstone over the course of 200 years
I can't see a John Shaw and Sarah Sloan having any children baptized anywhere in KKD or DFS 1790-1820.

Hi
While I was doing lots of checking, you posted!
The children's names seem to go along with the parents names except that Sarah and Jessie were 'switched' if strict naming conventions were used. Do you have Margaret Watt's mother's name?

Sorry no. Again another problem. What I have on Margaret's parents are again from her death cert. which gives them as John Watt and ? Maxwell. Their son John was infromant. She was born (from censuses) at Anwoth, but according to the entry for 18 May 1837 at Urr, she was 'of this parish'. I don't have any brothers or sisters to both William and Margaret in order to cross-check.
I have to thank you for going to all this bother.

They only had to be in the parish for a short time, so she might well have been born Anworth. Also, if the families were ag labs/tenant farmers, they might well have moved around.
However, a possibility:
I've just found a baptism in Rerrick, for a Jane Watt. Parents John Watt and Janet Maxwell.
I can't find any other likely ones. If the second daughter was Jessie, then Janet would tie in nicely - a reverse of the usual order.

Thanks Gadget. I've been in Kells churchyard and has a lot of headstones with Shaw on it. We have a caravan at Gatehouse so I always try and rummage around the ancestral areas when there. I am a bit surprised that John did not know his grandmother's name.

Have you met up with the (ex) Session Clerk in Parton. He's a wealth of information about the surrounding parishes. It might be worth calling on him if you're in the area.
