My wife's grandfather Jose Marcos de Silva married Emily Harriet Anderson in New Plymouth, New Zealand in 1901 before they moved to Mosgiel, near Dunedin.

She (and her various cousins) believed that Jose (in New Zealand he called himself Joseph) came from Argentina but at a recent cousin's reunion it was suggested that he may have come from the Philippines.

We have not been able to track down his arrival in New Zealand and anything about his ancestry although we understand that his father's name was Rodrigo Diaz de Silva and his mother was Maria Carmelita.

Where can we find out any information. We have looked at the IGI ancestry.com records and there appears to be nothing in either countries info.

I don't really have much idea but as no-one else has replied I thought I'd put my twopenn'orth in Grin

de and da Silva are probably either Spanish or Portuguese iriginally but as I'm sure you're aware these two countries did quite a lot of colonising so could be anywhere but I'd put Argentina as 1st choice and Phillipines as second.

How much have you done looking at general de/da silva family in NZ pre 1900, for possible family lines

eg
in 1867 Jose de Silva at Moa flat

is the surname sometimes just as SILVA in nz records

You have the NZSG index?? looking I see there is a Charles de silva death cert MAlaysia 1881, has some family member submitted this, is there a link??
Certainly many de/da Silva in NZ prior to 1900

Thanks Althea - this has been very helpful. I had searched on Papers Past for de Silva (a few adverts for his hairdressing business in Mosgiel. Had not thought of the da Silva angle - now i know why the name has changed - he went broke in New Plymouth, moved overseas to try sell some sort of patent to do with kerosene pumps, and then moved down to Mosgiel where most of his children
were born.

Also while all the family referred to his wife as Harriett, she was Emily. The advert of the marriage has been very helpful.... tells more than a marriage certificate and clearly place his place of birth as Manila..

From the information supplied it is clear the Josa da Silva (he later changed the spelling to de Silva) was born in Manilla, Phillipines.

He married in New Plymouth in 1901 - but when and how did he arrive in NZ?

Family members have heard that he was a cabin boy on a ship and jumped ship in NZ, I have not found him on the lest of deserters. is this just another family myth?

How did he arrive in NZ?

I have located that information on the NZSG CDr

It's clear now that the myth that Josa (later Jose and then Joseph) was from the Phillipines and not from Argentina...The first few children (of 9) were registered as da Silva and the rest as de Silva (my wife's maiden name).
Now he married Emily Harriet Anderson daughte of George Augustus Anderson, sometime of Gisborne. Another family mystery as some say he was from Sweden and others that he was from Scotland. Have not been able to verify anything yet. Still waiting on some family members to come forward with something more enlightening.
