James COPE
« on: Friday 25 April 08 11:15 BST (UK) »

Good morning - I am on the trail of a James Cope whom I know as born in Wallingford but christened in April 1811 Cholsey.

As far as our research goes he married an Amelia Godley (born 1811 Hambledon).

Can anyone enlighten me on their family please as we have loads of discrepancies.   Huh

With thanks.

Good morning Loupy

You don't say what else you already know - always useful to have full information!  So not sure whether your problem lies with James and Amelia's family or with their parentage?

Do you want census listings? If so - which censuses?

Hi Mum44 - silly me.    Cry   If possible need to clarify their children as we have conflicting information so possibly a census would come up with some answers, e.g. 1851 may hold the key.

With thanks.

Brilliant - that has confirmed some of our queries.  Is there any other children in the next census - ? Alfred ?

Loupy -  I'll get back to you very shortly - I have found who I think might be James -  but there are so many differences I want to check it thoroughly before I commit   Huh

Do you know whether he re-married between 1851 and 1861

Hi there - had to check my mothers notes and it seems that James had a "relationship" with Jemima Mortimore and had a child Lucy who was born 11 Jan 1863 in Portsmouth.

Does this help?

Indeed it does  Grin

So, here they seem to be in 1861:

RG09. P.638 Fol.98 Pg 45
Living 34 The Highlands, Oyster Street, Portsmouth

COPE
James  Head  42    <can't read occupation, will get back on this> B. Berks, Chorley
Jemima  Wife  46    B. Berks, Bray
Robert  Son  12    B. Bucks, Hambledon
Alfred  Son  7    B. Bucks, Stowe

I just couldn't make out why Jemima and why Portsmouth  Grin

Probably because they went into the Pub business - no other explanation available from my mothers jottings!!!

Any chance we can go backwards from James Cope now we have this info?  Or am I pushing my luck?

Thank you for your help.   Cheesy

Hiya Loupy

Is it possible that you have the the birth place and baptism place the wrong way round in your op,  I can't see a 1811 baptism at Cholsey for James

No, and it doesn't look like ag lab, farmer, or publican!  At first I thought the first word was Straw, but now maybe Steward & Miller?
Would you like me to post a link to the common room with it so other rootshatters can have a go at deciphering it?
