G'day all,
I am trying to find a DOB of Daniel Blair Brown, born ABT 1835 on the Isle of Wight, and any other information that can be sourced.
He came to Australia probably in his early 20's (it is unknown if he travelled with family or alone) dying in 1911 aged 76. On his tombstone it reads, "Daniel Brown. Master mariner. Native of the Isle of White" (Unless there is a different 'White/Wight' Island!) Unfortunately, that is it! No more information have I been able to find.
Any thoughts, details, census info. will be really appreciated.
Cheers,
TasG

With the surname BROWN you are going to have a struggle. His unusual middle name may help as it could be his mother's maiden name. It's a shame that he was born just prior to civil registration.
You may be ablt to get some help from the IOW Family History Society
http://www.isle-of-wight-fhs.co.uk/index.htm
or the IOW Records Office
http://www.iwight.com/library/record_office/default.asp
both have some online resources.

BLAIR & BROWN are not a good combination of names to search for on the Internet.

The Blair/Brown combination wasn't in the front of my mind when I wrote it down, but now that you draw my attention to it ... Not a good combination internet-wise!
The search begins!
Thanks,
TasG

On the 1841 census there are a couple of Daniel BROWNS born about 1826. One is an Ag lab the other is the son of a mariner. He is living with Maria aged 50 and Charles also aged 15 in High St., Yarmouth, IOW. I presume Maria's husband is away at sea. HO107/408/11 Folio 11 Page 17

There is a will dated 1867 on the Hampshire Records Office CALM database for
" Daniel Brown the elder of Yarmouth, Isle of Wight, superannuated pilot of the Honorable Board of Trinity"
http://calm.hants.gov.uk/DServeA/search.htm
It might be the only way to prove (or otherwise) that this is your Daniel's father.

Thanks bearkat,
You certainly know your ins and outs and where and what to look for. I will see what I can do to possibly get a view of it. It always makes it interesting when you live in Tasmania and the records don't!
You're a champ!
Cheers

Hi I have found several lengthy newspaper reports of “Destruction of The Amazon, A Frightful Loss Of Life” there was a devastating fire on board ship not long after she left Southampton, One of the missing crew was “Daniel Brown 27, A.., Yarmouth,” in a later issue he was reported as “persons saved in the two Ann E

G'day Ann,
What date, etc. have you for this? It seems some of your quote may have not come through ... I don't know if this is the same Daniel Brown, but it would certainly be interesting to have a look at the details. He was about 28 when he married in Australia ... he may have made an escape to Australia after such a lucky escape.
Any info would be appreciated!
Cheers
Grant

Hi, The missing line was boats rescued by the Gertrude, & landed at Brest, could he be yours? The ship departed port Friday, January 2, 1852. I have had to look at several reports to find date. If you would like some copies let me have your address. Ann E
