not obvious in 1871 ..... could be a situation where his mother has remarried and he is shown under stepfather's surname.

As we didnt get a hit from 1861, cant search for remarriages.

Hi

Thanks for your help again. I will perhaps investigate the family with him and perhaps obtain birth cert.

Many thanks

There is a marriage in Cockermouth with, on the same page:-

William Barnes and a Mary Ann Philipson

She could have been another of Elizabeth's daughters) so this looks very promsiing and I will investigate further for BM & Ds.

Is this the chap you were implicitly researching t'other day - daughter Miriam ?

If so, it seems there are 2 Williams born 1856 / 7 / 8 in the Whitehaven Dist.

The one you mention on this thread (in 1881), marries his landlady's daughter Elizabrth Frazer / Fraser and is some sort of Commision / Insurance Agent in 1891.

Miriams Dad is an Engineer in 1891 ....

Yes it was me following Miriam to Liverpool.

I thought her parents were as you say William Barnes (b 1858 St Bees) & Eliz Frazer (who married 1882).
I have trying to find William's father and hence this trail.

I am confused now (not difficult I know) because I thought this was the one and only William Barnes b around 1858 (the only other one being possibly his father also William born earlier who may have married Mary Ann Philipson in 1848 with William Jnr staying in 1861 with his grandmother Elizabeth Philipson - conjecture ). There are several deaths of William Barneses in Cumberland BUT I have also found the marriage of a Mary Ann Barnes (possibly William Snr's widow?) in Dec 1861 at Cockermouth to possibly either Jonathan Nutter or Thomas Wilson. Perhaps William jnr was with them in 1871?

regards

I think Miriams parents were the 'other' William' and Elizabeth Dodgson nee Murray ..... hence the presence of Dodgson stepkids in 1891 - couldnt see a marriage for that couple tho   Huh

I've had a look at the surnames you suggest in 1871 ...  cant see him !

Sorry you're absolutely right -
Apologies - a wild goose chase after I have re-visited - The only marriage I had found of Frazer / Barnes isn't I agree  the right one.

Does the census of 1901 give William's age? or William and Elizabeth's birthplaces? Also is it Hodgson or Dodgson?

That may help us
