not obvious in 1871 ..... could be a situation where his mother has remarried and he is shown under stepfather's surname.
As we didnt get a hit from 1861, cant search for remarriages.

Is this the chap you were implicitly researching t'other day - daughter Miriam ?
If so, it seems there are 2 Williams born 1856 / 7 / 8 in the Whitehaven Dist.
The one you mention on this thread (in 1881), marries his landlady's daughter Elizabrth Frazer / Fraser and is some sort of Commision / Insurance Agent in 1891.
Miriams Dad is an Engineer in 1891 ....

I think Miriams parents were the 'other' William' and Elizabeth Dodgson nee Murray ..... hence the presence of Dodgson stepkids in 1891 - couldnt see a marriage for that couple tho 
I've had a look at the surnames you suggest in 1871 ... cant see him !
