Mary Millar Marriage, which husband?
« on: Friday 25 April 08 13:28 BST (UK) »

Hi All
I have a puzzle which has cropped up regarding Mary Miller b. 15/05/1817 in Montrose, daughter of Robert Millar and Catherine Duncan.  Two different descendants of Mary have her married to different husbands and both are sure  that they have the right one Roll Eyes
One has Mary marrying David Scott in Montrose about 1844 and having one son David.
The other has her marrying Robert Turnbull 26/5/1848 in Berwick and having a daughter Mary who in turn married a John Elder and moved to Newcastle.  I have tried for a marriage between Mary and David Scott and also Robert Turnbull on ScotlandsPeople, but no joy.  Are there any rootschatters out there who could shed a light
Regards Jenc

Hi Jenc

Firstly, the Mary Miller who married a Robert Turnbull:

These are the children showing to them on IGI

1. MARGARET TURNBULL   Birth: 23 OCT 1848/ Christening: 20 NOV 1848 Whitsome And Hilton, Berwick, Scotland
2. ELISABETH TURNBULL Christening: 24 MAY 1851 Sprouston, Roxburgh, Scotland
3. MARY TURNBULL  Christening: 21 NOV 1853 Sprouston, Roxburgh, Scotland
4. JOHN TURNBULL Birth: 11 JUN 1857 Sprouston, Roxburgh, Scotland
5. JAMES TURNBULL  Birth: 26 OCT 1862 Sprouston, Roxburgh, Scotland

In the 1851 Census, I think this is them:

Robert Turnbull 24, general lab., b. Eccles, Berwickshire
Mary Turnbull    30, b. Whitsome, Berwickshire
Margaret Turnbull 2, b. Whitsome, Berwickshire

Address: Village No 84, Sprouston, Roxburghshire

I can't easily see them in 1861 but you would think they would be in Sproutson. SP has 24 entries for Turnbulls there, the transcript with soundex is showing none (?!). The original image on SP would also help to reconfirm Mary mother's birth place.

There is also this entry for the banns/marriage

MARY MILLER  Marriages:Spouse: ROBERT TURNBULL
Marriage: 26 MAY 1848  Swinton And Simprin, Berwick, Scotland

The Mary Millar who married a David Scott. This is the closest I can see on the 1851 index:

Mary Scott 33, wife, b. Montrose
Willm Scott 6, b. Montrose
Robt M Scott 3, b. Dundee
David Scott 1, b. Dundee

Address: 10 Malt House Close, Dundee Angus

There is a submitted entry for the marriage on IGI with the dates you give in 1844, however, I wonder if this is the actual extract for the marriage/banns

MARY ANN MILLER Marriages:Spouse:DAVID SCOTT
Marriage:  23 AUG 1838  Dundee, Angus, Scotland

I think the only way to get verification will be to look at the two Mary Miller's death certs although, on the face of, the David Scott marriage looks more likely.

Regards.

Hi Monica
Thank you so much for the swift reply and I'm certain you've solved the dilemma.
It's looking like the Miller/ Scott marriage is the correct one.  I have an 1841 listing of Mary's parents and siblings for West Wynd Dundee and she is absent, which would explain the marriage to David Scott in Dundee in 1838, as you would have thought she would still be at home with the family if she hadn't  been married till 1844.
I think we can definitely rule out the Turnbull marriage now, as that Mary was born in Whitsome Berwickshire.
I looked up the Mary Turnbulls aged from 5 - 10 on SP's 1861 census in Roxburghshire, there were 8 possibles and of course, typically, I picked the wrong one Embarrassed more credits down the ' swanny '
So a big big thank you once again to putting me on the right tracks, now to inform the rest of the family the puzzle is solved Grin  Warm regards Jenc
