the 1861 census shows James Hazeltine and wife and baby daughter, both Mary living at Evershed Farm Ockley. Still struggling to find him before this so as a step on the way can anyone who can search by address tell me who was living there in the '51 and '41 censuses? It may give a clue. His wife was a Harding. There is a suggestion that he may also have used the surname of Miles.

Hi
I have just ploughed through the 39 census images for Ockley in 1851 and I couldn't see any record for Evershed Farm or James Hazeltine(however spelt)/ Miles. A lot of the images were very difficult to read.
There is a vast age difference between him and Mary - would have thought he may have been married before.
Do you know anything else about him which may help?

Ok - a possible - in correct general area - Dorking.
1851
In the household of Robt Garard(Sawyer) Park Row, Wotton, Oakwood, Dorking there is
James Miles age 46 born Ockley Surrey, single, Agricultural labourer
If you have Ancestry this chap is transcribed as Meter
HO107/1598 Folio 55 Page 10.
Where does 'Miles' come into it - there isn't an entry for a James Miles born 1804/5 in Ockley on the 1841 that I can see

Do you have the marriage cert for James and Mary Harding?
Does it give the name of James' father?

Yes - that's why I asked if the father's name was on the marriage cert

to Tricia and Shaun J thanks for your replies, the Miles bit came in somewhat earlier as a possible explanation of the non appearing James H in the topic 'Ockley Parish Registers' It was suggested that he was christened Miles but sometimes used the surname Hazeltine as his grandmother was a Haselden. So it was interesting to see that a James Miles was living at Wooten in the household of Robert Garard and his age is right, these names keep popping up, there are Garrards in a parallel line to this one. I had ploughed through the '41 census at the FRC and it was almost unreadable in their copy! I no longer have an Ancestry sub. On the marriage cert he gives his father as John, lab. and claims to be a bachelor. This is certainly one of those brick walls and one I would love to demolish!.

It is a huge problem ploughing through the census images as, like 1851, - he wasn't in Ockley - so it becomes an impossible task.
It does look as though he wasn't married previously, though.
Sorry can't be of more help
