McGrath Family in Ballyraggett
« on: Friday 25 April 08 15:41 BST (UK) »

Hi ,

I am researching the McGrath family , they were from Ballyraggett , Co. Kilkenny . They were bakers in Ballyraggett . Some of the family immigrated to America ( Penn Yan , NY ) . Others stayed in Ireland . The ones that immigrated changed the McGrath name to Craugh . We have no idea why .

Here is the information below -

John McGrath b. 1799 in Ballyraggett

married Mary Brouthers

children of John and Mary McGrath -

*William McGrath - Craugh - b. Circa 1840 died of yellow fever 1888 in Penn Yan , NY  was married to a woman named Catherine ? from Ireland

*John McGrath -Craugh - b. circa 1832 in Ballyraggett  d. in Penn Yan , NY
married a woman named Margaret from Ireland

*Patrick McGrath - Craugh - b. 1835 in Ballyraggett  d . 13 Mar 1919 in Penn Yan , NY
married a Margaret Long in Ballyraggett , she was born in 1838 .

*Michael McGrath - Craugh - b. July 1838 in Ballyraggett d. 12 Oct 1910 in Penn Yan , NY
married a Margaret Sweeney in Ballyraggett , she was born 16 Aug 1836

* Martin McGrath - b. ?  , never immigrated to America , stayed in Ballyraggett and was a baker/confectioner . He married Anna Frye from Rathdowney.
They had 8 children . 2 of the eight stayed in Ireland , the other 6 immigrated to Penn Yan also .

Martin McGrath died in 1882 in Ballyraggett .

The 2 chidren of Martin McGrath and Anna Frye that stayed in Ireland -

James McGrath and John McGrath , they were bakers also .

If anyone has any information on this family or is researching McGrath , please let me know . I have the records of the ones that immigrated , but I am having trouble finding records of the ones who stayed in Ireland . I only have their names , no dates or marriages for them .

Thanks ,

Megan

The ones that immigrated changed the McGrath name to Craugh . We have no idea why .
The surnames McGrath and McGraw are interchangable to perhaps the just adapted the surname to something that sounded like their original name. An old spelling is McGraa and all three versions would be pornounced much the same.
