Hi, Can anybody help?
The IGI has the following two entries: Elizabeth Lodge Audley christened 2 June 1851 at Newcastle Under Lyme,Stafford, parents John Audley & Miranda
Elizabeth Lodge Audley christened 7 March 1852 atNewcastle Under Lyme,Stafford, parents John Audley & Miranda.
In the BMD indexes I can only find one birth registration for Elizabrth Lodge Audley in Q2 1851
Is there any one who can check the christening records at Newcstle Under Lyme for me? Many thanks in anticipation of your help Regards Brian Audley

They are the same batch number. You could order the film from your family history centre (LDS).
Did you get the marriage?
Dec 1849 Newcastle L 17/159 John Audley to Merinda Lawton

Hi Silvery, Many thanks for that information. The trouble id that my nearest Family History Centre in Liverpool is only open when I am at work. I was hoping that someone would have better access so I do not have to take a day off work to check the information.
Yes I have the marriage information. Many thanks for your help Regards Brian

Sorry, I'm not likely to be going to Stafford or elsewhere to check, but I've also checked the IGI. I note that the later dated entry has mother as Mirranda, the earlier being Miranda. I'm wondering if this was a register where the date of birth has been entered as well as of baptism & that Elizabeth was born 1851 (as the registration you've found) & baptised the following year. It is possible that the first Elizabeth died & that another child has been given the same name (though I can't see a matching death on FreeBMD), but the dates are a bare 9 months apart, so seems unlikely.

Could another possibility be that the first baptism was performed soon after birth as there was the danger of her not surviving, then followed by a later ceremony. The parish records might give more details.

Hi Mshrmh & handm,
I agree with all your comments but which one is the true answer.
I have an instance where a child died and the next child was given the same name and they used the first childs birth certificate for the second to save some money.
Do either of you know a library or record office that will have a copy of the parish register to see if I can get them to do a quick look up.
Thanks for your help Regards Brian

Hi Brian - the IGI is unhelpful in the way it describes the church, as there were two parish churches in N-u-L at the time - St George (the original) & St Giles which opened in 1829 (per GENUKI). Using the Hugh Wallis pages the film numbers for St Giles are listed under that name, and the film number for the baptism(s) is listed as Newcastle - hence I'd say it is St George's. The original registers are at Stafford Records Office. They usually have microfiche copies available to view and there may also be fiche copies at Stoke Archives. A link to both http://www.staffordshire.gov.uk/leisure/archives/default.htm Whether they would do a "quick look up" I don't know, but worth a try, unless a RootsChatter is visiting either soon.

Hi Everyone who has helped on this request so far,
I have just received an e-mail from Staffordshire Record office:
Elizabeth Lodge Audley was christened 2 June 1851 at St George's Newcastle and Elizabeth Lodge Audley was christened 7 March 1852 at St Giles Newcastle.
Two christenings 9 months and 5 days apart. So was the same person christened twice or did the fist Elizabeth Lodge die and the next child was given the same name? Many thanks for your help Regards Brian

Hi Brian - thanks for the update. This is a puzzle! Does the e-mail give the parents' names? Like you I can't find more than the one birth or death registration on either FreeBMD or StaffsBMD - I also tried using Lodge in case she'd been born under that name & parents had married after. I also omitted a first name in case the registration was in a variant of Elizabeth. My only other suggestion is to try tracking the family(s) on the census - I haven't access, that may help (or not!)

Marriage - Sept 1871 Newcastle L 6b/93 Elizabeth Lodge Audley to John Ford or William Ledsham
1881 census RG11/2752/58/13 address Drayton in Clay, Uttoxeter, Stafforshire, Railway House
John Ford 30 station master b Langport Staffs Elizabeth Lodge 29 b New-L Miranda Alice 7 b Rocester Staffs Lucy Annie 5 b Clifton, Staffs John Sheppard 77 g'father, carver and gilder b Wincanton, Somerset Jane Sheppard 75 g'mother b Rotherham, Yorks
I can' find another Elizabeth Audley b Staffordshire, New-L. The name of the child is pretty significant I think. And the grandparents are with her.
Perhaps the two 1852 christenings were cousins or the first child died, as you say. edit: same parents both times.
