I have ventured onto this board seeking advice as to how I can find John Pomeroy, born about 1833 in Colyton, Devon, and on the UK 1841 census, aged 8 ... by 1851 he can't be found in UK, so I assume by the age of 18 he had left the country.
By 1862 he has moved to Canada - according to the 1901 census for Barkerville, in the Cariboo region ... a gold rush town where he eventually died in 1913.
How can I find out how and when and if he first went to the states; what he did while he was there and any other info about him ?

There is a passenger list for the ship Constellation from Liverpool to New York arriving 13 Apr 1854. There is a John Pomeroy, age 21, male, miner, from England, destination - US. Unfortunately, that is all the information it gives, so it's hard to be certain that it's a match. I didn't see anyone in the 1860 US Census who matched him.

That's an excellent start.
I just have no idea what sort of records are available for USA around that time ... or where to search ...
If he's not on the 1860 census, does that mean there are USA censuses every ? ten years ? five years ??

For the US, the census is every 10 years on the years ending in 0. Some states have censuses too, typically done on years ending in 5 from what I've seen, but not all are available on line. Without a location or state where he went or other specific information, it's probably going to be something like finding a needle in a haystack.
Did he marry or have children? Did he have any siblings that came to the US or Canada? Was there any obituary available for him? Do you have a death certificate for him and, if so, was there an informant? Just trying to brainstorm a few ideas to give us some clues.

As far as I know, no marriage, no children. He died in Barkerville, Canada, in 1913, and I have found out quite a bit about his time in Canada ... thanks to some very helpful RC people !
Its his time in the US that interests me ... where he was, what he was doing, did he in fact marry in the US, was he a miner or gold prospector as he was later in Barkerville, BC ... someone even found me a picture of him, but as I say, its the US bit I'm curious about !
Here he is ... (small, wasn't he ! )

Hi Lydart,
Since you have his death date, I presume you found his memorial ins. at Barkerville cem.
"In memory of John POMEROY. Native of Colyten, England. Born 1833. Died 1913."
The 1901 & 1911 census says he is single, so it is unlikely he married. Did you find him in the 1911 census? He still says he came to Canada in 1862, so that is consistent (always a good sign).
You are going to have a tough row to hoe in looking for him in US between 1854 and 1862, especially if he was "following the gold", or perhaps silver mining. There were a lot of places he could have been, and this was a time of constant motion in America.
I have a 3 ggf I know of up to 1856, and he disappears in 1860 and 1870. I find him again as an elderly man in 1880 all the way across the country. I find some of his kids in 1860 & 1870, but not him. The only reason I found him is that I decided to trace his kids (was living with one in 1880): everyone else researching him had him dying in 1856.
Good luck on this.
Nick

I really have very little knowledge of him except for the bits RC members helped me with for when he was in Canada.
This is what we found out ...
http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,215120.msg1117400.html#msg1117400
and now I've come back to him to try and locate him in the US.
Its a tough one. He was a gr. gr uncle to my father

Thanks Nick.
The Pomeroy name is variously spelled Pomroy, Pumroy, Pomrey ...
