Deaths in Scotland
« on: Saturday 26 April 08 04:47 BST (UK) »

Can anyone tell where you have to go to find deaths in Scotland both before an after 1855.   Everything else seems to be on line but not deaths.

I am looking for a Thomas Gentles b abt 1824 in Jamaica and died, it would seem, sometime between the 1891 and 1901 census.    Also looking for his wife Helen who died in the same time period.   Both were living in Falkirk at the time of their deaths.

Any help would be most appreciated.

Thanks

Deaths, 1855-1957, are online and downloadable (for a fee) on ScotlandsPeople at:
http://www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk/

An index for later deaths (to 2006) is also available on SP - but no images for them.

A free search on SP (refining parameters) finds the death of a Helen GENTLES, other surname MONRO, year 1898, age 78, place Falkirk.

Regards,

JAP
PS: Helen presumably the daughter of William MONRO & Janet GENTLES bap 26 Dec 1819 in Falkirk.

Hi Jap

Thanks for the info.     Do you know about getting deaths before 1855.   Is there anywhere to find those on line or is it a matter of sending away for the information.   I am interested in Falkirk and Glasgow.

Thanks

Pre-1855 is a much more difficult matter.

And not a great deal of information online.

Some church registers include death/burial information - but you need to know which parish you are searching for and then order relevant films in to your local LDS Family History centre.

There are also booklets of pre-1855 Memorial Inscriptions published (including some for Stirlingshire).  These are held by some genealogical libraries and are available for purchase.

Boongie Pam's thread about starting research in Scotland (stickied near the top of the Scotland General board) is very well worth reading.  See:
