I'm really stuck with this piece of research & have been for several years so hoping fresh eyes might bring some results. John Wright (1749-1831) is named in the will of Martha Bravery, spinster (proved 1818, Ewell) as a nephew. This would imply that John was the son of a married sister...yes? The only John Wright that I can find that fits the bill is a clock & watchmaker in Dorking (Martha was formerly from Dorking as was the rest of the Bravery family) I believe he married; 1. A Sarah. Can't find marriage but a sarah Wright w/o John is buried Dorking 1778. 2. Mary Reed. 1779 Dorking. Both are widowed & a witness is an Elizabeth Palmer (mentioned as niece in Marrtha's will) so another family connection.Two daughters are born to them, Mary 1779-1784 & Sarah 1784 who later marries Thomas Hubbard.
The will of John Wright (an executor is James Bravery...another connection) written 1825, codicil added 1829, proved 1831. Mentions, 'my wife, Susanna Wright, son, Thomas Wright, watch & clockmaker of Dorking, daughter sarah w/o Thomas Hubbard' & 'daughter, Ann Vernon w/o Robert'. The codicil in 1829 adjusts the beneficiaries, as Ann dies in 1828, her age at death gives her a dob of 1776, but can't find her baptism. The only Thomas Wright I can find is baptised to a Thomas & Sarah in 1775, Dorking Right date, wrong parents. He is also a clock maker & I have his will.
Then we have supposedly have John Wright marrying a Sussana but I can't find that either.
This is what I'm looking for;
1. The baptism/parents of John Wright about 1749. I suspect his father is Thomas. 2. A marriage of John Wright to Sarah ? probably about 1774 as Thomas & Ann are baptised 1775 & 1776. 3. A marriage between John & Susanna. There is one on the SMI in 1801 but I have Mary dying in 1807 Dorking so I'm not sure about that
It looks as if John Wright & first wife, Sarah were not in the Dorking area when they married & had the 2 children. It looks as if he is in Dorking from about 1778 when Sarah dies.
All sources have been exhausted on this. The only source that I haven't tried is the BVRI,

I owe you one, Jane, after you got stuck into my James Edmunds scenario!!
Yes, it was only submitted, so has to be treated with caution.
I wonder if any one is going to the Surrey History Centre and could squint at the Dorking registers for that date for you to check it out. I went there a few weeks ago (looking unsuccessfully for clues on James, of course) and it is a great place. Sorry, Not likely to go there again though, I am not local to it at all, but just made the effort the once.
Another idea would be to appraoch it from a different angle. Do you know Martha's parents? They too should be the parents of the sister who married a Mr Wright, and then who had John and possibly Thomas. IF you could find them, their Will might help clarify - at least it would confirm you are on the right track if it mentioned a daughter who married a Mr Wright - mentioning a grandson John would of course be a bonus. If you could just get the sisters name from somewhere, it might help find a Bravery/Wright marriage somewhere and that in turn might help find more about their son John.
I am really just thinking aloud here, and waffling a bit!

I have a friend who lives near Woking so I could see if she's paying a visit to look at the Dorking registers. I have them as a transcript but they don't include marriages as they are recorded on the SMI. Believe me, I've approached this from all angles known to man Yes, I know the parents of Martha (1739-1818) They were a Henry & Margaret. Now this complicates the issue as Margaret married Henry Bravery as a widow (1736 Rusper Ssx) She had married a Thomas LIFFORD 1723, Capel. Her maiden name was VENTRICE. From this marriage there is a possiblity she had 4 children; Sara 1724, Jane 1728, Ann 1730 & Thomas 1732. I can't tell for sure if these Lifford baptism's are a result of the union between Margaret & Thomas as only the father's name is recorded. Two Thomas Lifford's are buried in Capel, 1727 & 1733, either one could be her husband. I do know that Ann Lifford married Thomas Worley 1769, Dorking which suggests that Margaret & Thomas Lifford had at least those first three children. Henry & Margaret had 4 children that I know of, Margaret 1738, Capel, MARTHA 1739, Capel Henry 1741 Capel & James 1746 Dorking. All accounted for (except for Henry who's another brickwall) Now, this could mean that Martha regarded one of her step-sisters (LIFFORD) as a full sister when she names John Wright as a nephew, making John's mother one of the Lifford girls There is no will for Henry or Margaret, I have the will of James 1746 & there's no mention of cousins. So we could be looking for a Bravery/Wright or Lifford/Wright marriage OR she might have been widowed herself when she married John's father. Just more complications
