Mary's parents were James Rule and Grace Jenkins and according to Mary's death certificate she was born in Penzance. Could anyone help me to find a record of Mary's birth or the marriage of her parents?
Mary's led a very interesting life - she married in London in 1847, sailed to the Sth Pacific with her husband in the 1850s where they were shipwrecked at Tonga. All her children were born in Tonga; the family moved to Australia in 1876 and Mary died there in 1911. Quite a story!

Thanks for that Chris. It certainly looks like Mary Jane's parents especially as she is supposed to have been born in 1828.
Do you think there is a chance of finding the family on the 1841 Cornish census? There are so many different parish names and I am never sure which one is correct for Madron.
Mary married Lawrence Hartshorne in 1847 in Bethnal Green and I do not know when or why she went to London but I have always wondered if, because Lawrence was a seaman, if perhaps they had met in Cornwall. Lawrence became a Captain in 1852 - his story is also very interesting as he was born in Nova Scotia, had a Loyalist father who had left Virginia after the War of Independence and a grandfather who had been a friend of George Washington's. Quite a mixture!

Many thanks for trying to find the Rule family on the census.
No, I am do not know where they were in 1841 and they could all have been in London or perhaps James & Grace died and Mary left to seek work.
I can only guess about how Mary came to be in London married to a Nova Scotian Sea Captain!
