Oxfordshire "wills library" - April update
« on: Saturday 26 April 08 13:28 BST (UK) »

In December I posted about the Oxfordshire FHS's latest project - that
of creating a "wills library".

It's linked from the yellow web resources box at www.ofhs.org.uk

There are now 680 documents on the site, and 7,700 "name mentions".

So - a significant library already !  Do go & explore - there have been a
lot of additions since December! If you find exciting links (your ancestor
may have been mentioned in someone else's will) - do post about it.  We'd
love to feature some connections made through the "library" in our next
journal.

And - if you have will transcripts - the library will grow if you dig deep,
and forward them to Dave Beames, project coordinator. Details about that
aspect are on the site.  About 80 folk visit the site each day.  If you have
a will uploaded to the site, you're welcome to link to it from your own
website.

Thanks, Dave, and Alan Simpson, who's worked on the software behind the
scenes. !

Paula -

You list as an interest BARTLETT of Henley on Thames.

There are wills at Oxfordshire Record Office of:

Alice, wid., 1531

Thos., baker, 1632

Ralph, 1661

Robert, wheelwright, Northfield End, Henley, 1805

Mary, widow, Northfield End, Henley, 1808

Mary, widow, 1819

(Across the whole period there are more for Watlington.)

So - if any seems relevant to your line - please think about contributing them to the collection !

Unfortunately I can't connect to any of those, Wendy.
Though I am seriously considering Robert 1805.
I have Bett Bartlett being born in Henley 1766 with a father Robert and mother Mary...
It could be that Robert 1805 and Mary widow 1808 are Bett's parents.
This is where I fall of that branch, so perhaps it is worth a look.
Thanks for drawing my attention to them....
I'll let you know what happens......

Hi Paula

A more recent update has now taken place, on 6 August 2008, and we now have 1102 testators in the database.

Why not check again and see if "one day" turns out to be today ! Go to www.ofhs.org.uk and click on "Transcribed wills".

Best wishes.

Hi Paula

That might seem to be the case - but do keep checking our "wills' library" as you never know what might appear !

Best wishes.

Paula

Good evening Paula and Lesanne

I'm not sure whether either of you are in the UK, but if you live within striking distance of Oxford, why not come to the Oxfordshire FHS Open Day on Saturday 20 September 2008 ? The details are at :-

http://www.ofhs.org.uk/index.html

A guy by the name of Dave Beames runs our "Wills' Library", and he will be present at the Open Day so as to discuss those prickly wills' problems with our visitors.

Why not consider coming along and trying to sort out your wills' problems with our expert ?

Best wishes.

I'm not far away, Paul, only in Banbury, but I don't do much travelling, thanks for the offer though.

Hi Lesanne

I would have suggested your trying to fit a trip to ORO around our meeting on the evening of Monday 27 October 2008, when Mark Priddey - ironically a senior member of staff from ORO - will speak to us on :-

"Tales from the Bawdy Courts – Records of the church or ecclesiastical courts of Bishop and Archdeacon".

However, the fact that ORO is closed on Monday and Tuesday probably means that isn't a runner.

Looking ahead, if this society can ever help you, then do please let me know. In addition to having meetings, we have our own research centre just outside of Oxford. We advertise this as having limited opening hours, but for folks who live outside of the area, we can do special openings that are convenient to those attending our meetings. And in addition, Oxford's splendid local studies library "Oxfordshire Studies" is open on Tuesday.

So maybe a trip to Oxford to take in some research and one of our meetings might be a possibility after all ?

Best wishes.
