Chelsea St Luke Marriages & Burials - Completed

Does anyone have access to a transcript or CD of the Burials for Chelsea St Luke ? I have 2 Horsman burials in the Chelsea RD in 1850 and 1852, and wondered if they were at St Luke.
Is there a similar CD for marriages which would cover 1854 and 1884 ?

Hi Heathers

There is a list here of all the parishes that make up the Chelsea Registration District which would need searching for your enquiry. Some don't have churchyards or obviously will be too new and can be discounted immediately.

However, by the 1850's almost all churchyards in London & the surrounding areas were full and so cemeteries were opened. Brompton Cemetery opened between in 1840 served this area of London.

I've got a London Metropolitan Archives look-up offer running at the moment and can add you to my look-up list. It will take a few weeks to get to your look-up as I have an outstanding list that I'm working my way through. If you're happy to wait let me know, if not the LMA does carry out research but charges from £30.

At the end of the day though if he is not buried in one of the parishes he could be at Brompton. Look-ups for a fee are done here

Hello Dawn, and thanks for the kind offer. I suspect that if burials were still occurring there - the church would be St Luke Chelsea. The family lived in that area in 1851, and one of the sons married there in 1850.
I am looking for 1 qtr 1850 Anne Hors(e)man and 2 qtr 1852 Mary Hors(e)man.
If you are able to check burials in these two quarters out at some stage, it would be great.

I have only just seen your post...sorry for the delay Roll Eyes

Anne Horseman was buried on 8th March 1850 aged 24 at St Luke's Chelsea, she had been living at the Parochial School House, Chelsea.

There was also an Ann Frances Horseman buried 29th March 1852 aged 3 months at St Luke's Chelsea who had been living at D'Oyley Street, Chelsea.

Mary Horseman was buried 11th May 1852 aged 34 at St Luke's Chelsea who had also been living at D'Oyley Street Chelsea.

I don't know whether you have been to St Luke's, I visited the church a few years ago. Much of the graveyard has been converted into gardens and a children's playground. The surviving gravestones have been collected and replaced around the boundary of the church but the inscriptions have been badly weathered.

Many thanks for the look up of burials for Chelsea St Luke. The burial of Anne confirmed my suspicions (her husband was a schoolmaster), but Mary was not who I expected - but D'Oyley street rings a bell (somewhere)

Since receiving the information about the Mary who lived at D'Oyley Street, I have tried to find her on the 1851 census in London - to no effect - neither can I see a Birth for Ann Frances Horsman on the GRO indexes. Can anyone give me a clue as to which piece number D'Oyley Street may come under in 1851.

I have found D'Oyley Street in 1851 and followed the buildings through the census but your Horsemans are not listed! Sad

The 1851 reference for the street is: HO107 1474 313 about page 50.

I guess Mary and Ann Frances Horsman moved to D'Oyley Street after the 1851 census was taken.

Incidentally, D'Oyley Street was in the parish of Holy Trinity Brompton in Chelsea and yet they were buried at St Luke's in Chelsea close to where the Parochial School was sited. This would suggest they once lived closer to St Luke's where they were parishioners. It is not unusual to move around the area, was Mary married? Perhaps she had to leave the school setting if she was an unmarried mother?

Although there seems to be no record of Ann Frances' birth her death is listed on free bmd:

Mar 1852 Ann Frances Horsman Chelsea 1a 112

and

Mar 1850 Anne Horsman Chelsea 3 58
Jun 1852 Mary Horsman Chelsea 1a (108 or 168)

Their death certificates might reveal more.

Mary and Ann Frances are a bit of a mystery. What is going through my mind currently is could Mary be an unmarried sister in law of the Anne who died aged 24.
Anne was married to Thomas, the son of John and Mary Horsman (who were in the area in 1851).
They were originally from Monmouth, and I originally thought that the Mary who died would have been Mary senior - so finding the younger Mary was was quite a surprise.
Or - did Mary ? have an illeg. child Ann Frances ?, and then did she marry a Horsman, whereupon the child took the Horsman name. That would account for no GRO record. Or did Mary ? have a liaison with Thomas (a schoolmaster) and because of his position did she and the child take the Horsman name to make it look legit? At the time Thomas was between wives 1 and 2.

Did the burial record of Mary give any occupational clue (sometimes they do).

As always - finding one answer opens up a lot of other questions.

I gave you all the details from the parish burial records other than the vicar's name which was more of a signature which I couldn't read. Unfortunately no occupation was mentioned.

I am not surprised the baby Ann Frances' birth was not registered, Mary may have been too ill as she died shortly afterwards. (I have a 3 month baby die without a birth registration in my family tree, I guess it was not uncommon.)

Do you know when Thomas, John and Mary (senior) died?

Just to add, although civil registration started in 1837 it wasn't compulsory to register births until the mid 1870's, there may not be a birth entry to find.

That is interesting Dawn. The baby in my tree was born in 1893 and I can't find any records for the parents' marriage either! Shocked

I don't know whether you have your Horsmans in 1861 Heathers?
I have found them visiting a married Mary Henderson who was born in Monmouth living at Church Street Elvet Durham.

I can't find them in 1871 but Horseman seems to be a popular name in Monmouth.

I'd not found John & Mary Horsman post 1851 - so the pointer to Durham was very welcome. What were they doing there ?
Their son Thomas (the schoolmaster) went to Leeds where he lived for many years. He finally died on the isle of Wight.
