My ggggfr Capt Joseph Bazalgette RN died in Lind Street in 1849. Since he was buried in Brading I assumed he lived there. A previous posting following that line of enquiry is:
http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,253297.0.html
I mistakenly thought that Lind Street was an entirely commercial street, where he was unlikely to have lived, but looking at pictures of Lind Street I saw that there were a lot of houses there - in fact there still are, including a Georgian terrace. My ggg grandparents were both suffering from terminal illnesses by 1847, so it looks as if they just sold their house in London and took the train and ferry to Ryde, where they got lodgings in Lind Street, either renting them or staying in the house of a friend, until Joseph died in January 1849. I expect he had a yen to be by the sea again. He didn't own a house there, but I have requested copies of the rate books in case I can work out where they stayed. There might just have been something like a nursing home there, but those weren't that common in those days I understand.
This is what Lind Street looks like now:

I'm rambling a bit, but if by chance someone knows anything about Lind Street at that time I thought I might get lucky! Was there perhaps a local newspaper?
Best wishes, Chasbaz

Bazalgette, but mainly not FH information. Writing e-bio of Jean Louis Bazalgette. Researching for e-bio of Captain Joseph William Bazalgette, RN

Does the death certificate give the number of Lind Street?
Who was the informant?

From a book I have on Local Newspapers, there does not seem to be any published on the Isle of Wight which covers that period. The earliest date that I can find is 1852 - the Isle of Wight Observer.
Have you been in touch with the Record office on the island? They really are the people who would be able to give you the best information - or even the local studies section of the library? Contact details here:

As I said on the other thread, there were some gentry listed living on Lind Street around that time and lodging houses so there are a number of possibilities.

Looking at Lind Street in the 1851 census there are some houses occupied by fairly wealthy people including a James MASTERS, Commander RN at Willow Cottage. Further along the road there are tradesmen.

Hi,
It looks like Ann WEARN to me
I think I've found her in Union Road in 1851, and she's a nurse which could explain her presence at the death.
