Marriage of the females would seem the most likely reason for not finding them under Clasper
Have you checked for their marriages on either freebmd/IGI/GRO index

Hi Barbara
Hope you had a good break.
I noticed the address of Woodsfield Cottages which you gave for James in 1861. When I did that entry, in the early hours of 7th April, I thought it said “Modified Cottages”. I just checked again and I now think it says Woodifield Cottages (in line with the name of the Colliery)
Anyway, here he is again.....
1871
Auckland RG10/4937 Folio 11 Page 16
James Clasper Head M 40 Brick Moulder Durham Swalwell Elizabeth do Wife M 34 Durham Hetton Jane A do Daur 4 Durham Crook James Henderson Lodger W 57 Coal Miner Scotland Alexander Jackson Lodger U 33 Labour in Coke Yard Westmorland Newby
West Road, Crook & Billy Row
He can be seen in 1881 at Chester le Street RG11/4985 Folio 99 Page 6 with Elizabeth and Jane A, living in Lamesley.
He also appears on the 1891 and 1901 censuses in Lamesley, but the entries for both seem to be very garbled. In 1891 he is shown to be married to a different Elizabeth (nee Hanratty from Ireland) with his new mother in law and brothers in law living with him. In 1901 he is shown as married to the original Elizabeth again but he now seems to have two daughters called Jane who were born in Crook in 1867. One of them is single and one of them is married with two children, plus he (allegedly) has another 7 year old daughter called Elizabeth
I decided not to mention any of this in case it caused confusion
