"Minerva"

Can anyone find a record of a Thomas Anderson travelling on the Minerva to Australia in about 1857? He came to Australia from Fermanagh in Ireland. There should possibly also be a George Anderson on the same ship who died on the voyage. Maxene

Thank you, Sue. I did try to look in the NSW government records and a Hackers notice came up so I quickly exited. I was hoping that you may have had other resources. All I know ( but cannot substantiate - other than through family legend) is that Thomas and George were brothers from Fermanagh, northern Ireland. Thomas was approx. 21 (I believe he was born in 1836 in Scotland, west of the highlands in Lochabar or Lockabar in Invernesshire). The family relocated to Fermanagh in approx. 1841. Thomas and George emigrated to Australia with George dying on the voyage. When Thomas arrived in Sydney, he initially worked in the gasworks before moving to Robertson/Suttons Forest with his wife, Jane McBarron whom he married in Australia. She was also from Fermanagh but I have not been able to establish if they knew each other in Ireland. Jane's older brother, John, ran a boarding house in 155 Clarence Street, Sydney - Thomas may have met her there. Thomas died in Robertson in 1906. To date I have not been able to find a record of George's death. but I have only today been given the clue that they MAY have sailed to Australia on the Minerva - it is my best lead in 3 years!! Any info I have is from notes my late grandfather made from talks he'd had with Thomas. My uncle passes on info from these notes when he recalls it. Thank you for any help you may be able to provide.
