Harriett REED, Digby Institution
« on: Monday 28 April 08 13:27 BST (UK) »

I am looking for the illegitimate child of Harriett Reed (c1832). Harriett was sent to DigbyInstitution Exeter this  in 1851 as she was unmarried and pregnant. She married in 1857 and her first child to that marriage was b 1858. Cannot find her first born living with her on any on the censuses. How would i go about finding a birth. I have looked at Reed births in Exeter 1851/1852 and found a few. Would her baby have been born at the institution? Undecided
Regards and thanks in advance, Nicola

Hi

The 1851 shows her in the Devon County Lunatic Asylum age 18 b Upottery in Devon

There is an entry against her occupation (farm servant) which looks like inn born or inn dorm.  I don't know whether that is an indication that she had already given birth or that she was still pregnant

The census was March 1851 so any birth would be in 1851 - not 1852 which may help to narrow it down but there are still a lot of birth registrations

There is no evidence to show whether the child survived

Your best bet would be to see if the records are available for the Asylum at the records office as you may get more info there
