Can anyone living in the Rushden, Wallington, Sandon area of north east Hertfordshire help me in my search. My great x3 grandparents and their son lived at Hyndes Spring Cottage, Shaw Green (it was often known as Hines's), throughout the whole of the nineteenth century. The cottage was situated just north of Shaw Green Farm on what is now a byeway called Shawgreen Lane.
Any details would be good! Does this cottage still exist in it's more or less original state? Is there still a cottage of this name in Shaw Green? Are there any old photos of the cottage in existance? etc.
Looking at old maps of the area, I can see that there was a pair of cottages about 300m north of Shaw Green Farm on the west (Wallington parish) side of Shaw Green Lane - they appear on the 1877 and 1898 edition 1:2500 OS maps of the area but not the 1923 edition - when the field they stood in is shown as scrub. Modern maps show that the pond that was in front of the cottages is still there. Today there are only three properties at Shaw Green - Shaw Green Farm, Drapers Farm and Bounds Cross. Richard.
Thanks for the research. The cottages identified are those in question. It's disappointing, but not unexpected, that they no longer exist My only hope is that a Rootschatter may be able to point me in the direction of an old photo. Pretty long shot but that's the only hope.
