This has happened in a number of different areas in the UK. It makes me wonder if it's some sort of anti-religious group/cult that's doing the damage.
If it was kids/youths or even yobs, you would thought it would have swept through the country from one end to another, from what i've seen in the press, the areas seem to be targeted at random. I haven't heard of anyone been caught or prosecuted for this.
I do remember reading about a group of people breaking into vaults/crypts to get bones to make musical instruments some years ago.

If that was happening in the UK it would be more likely to the local council on a health and safety purge. Hundreds of cemeteries up and down the country have suffered from such official vandalism. Cheers Guy

Found the article link I google the name and it seems the group are now selling the recordings that they did at the time, on the net. Wonder if they'll be using my 4th great grandparents bones as instruments in any of their recordings.

Hi, Just been reading this thread, and it brought to mind a cemetery that my second cousin and I visited in the early summer of 2007, to see if we could locate an ancestors grave. We didn't find the grave we were looking for but spent a lovely sunny afternoon looking at the wonderful Victorian monuments erected to celebrate the lives of many of the families we had come across in the history of the town. So, it saddend me when I went into the library on my next visit to hear that the cemetery had been vandalised: http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/england/derbyshire/6926824.stm Just before that I had been trying to locate my ggg-grandfather's final resting place. I looked on the internet for information about the church in this pretty, sleepy village, Stanton by Dale, and was surprised to find the following site: http://www.antichurch.org.uk/HallOfShame.htm# Anyway, I went to visit my ggg-grandfather's grave. I rang in advance to ask if it would be possible to go inside the church, but the vicar said they had had to lock it because a memorial window celebrating the Stanton Ironworks had been smashed twice, etc. I asked him if he knew his church was on the list given on the second website , and he jokingly said no, but at least it was a claim to fame! What could he say! I have no idea why it has been listed - it is a beautiful, "middle of the road" anglican church. The grave was situated in an idyllic spot, and you would think what a beautiufl final resting place. Thankfully the beautiful stained galss window has been repaired, and I am really grateful - it is a tribute to my ancestors who moved from Staffordshire, with their families and communities, to build up this part of Derbyshire history which brought work and wealth to Derbyshire's people for many years. And a company that genuinely looked after it's workforce. Quite what this sort of site adds to people's lives I don't know - thank goodness for the positive, helpful ones like rootschat! Paulene

Copied from MyFM.com (our local radio station) ..." CHARGES LAID IN CEMETERY VANDALISM .. Police say alcohol was a factor in the decision made by three Strathroy-Caradoc teenagers to overturn and distroy 74 headstones at Strathroy Cemetery. Three males, two sixteen year olds and a 19 year old were arrested Tuesday and each has been charged with one count each of Mischief exceeding $5000. The teens were released on Promise to Appear in Court on June 2nd and 4th. They are not allowed to associate with each other, go to the cemetery or drink alcohol until that time and they must obey a curfew."
One hopes that pleading alchohol was factor in the decision [contadiction in terms] won't be a mitigating factor when it comes to trial.
If they drink then act against the law, let the law descend on them- in most cases they damage the property of others, and where headstones are involved this hurts sensibilties also. Go for them, cops Better than a fine or magisterial slap on the wrist would be an order to make them restore the graves- with their own money if not their labour
