How  am I expected to find out information about a relative if I don't know if the person in question is

alive or deceased?

You can search the complete BMD index at ancestry - you can have free access to ancestry at the library.

Death registrations post 1983 are pretty easy to find - pre 1983 you have to search quarter by quarter year by year - it can be very time consuming.

If you think the death (if it occured) may have been post 1983 PM me nd I will have a look
