I have a Lily Callow born 1878 in Ottery St Mary. Parents John William Callow and Rosina Smerdon.
John Callow died shortly after and in the 1881 census Rosina is living with her 3 year old daughter and her parents (Herman and Mary Smerdon) and she is listed as a widow.
In 1885 Rosina Smerdon married George Rowe. George was born in 1863 in Ottery St Mary. His parents were George Rowe (a thatcher) and Emma Burrow. (obviously there had to be a Burrow connection in there somewhere) I do not need any information on the parents as I already have all that.
Now my questions are 1 - where is Lily Callow in the 1901 census? She is not with her mother, stepfather, and half-siblings. And where-ever she is, which name is she using? Callow or Rowe?
2 - If she did get married - when was she married and to whom?
I found these three possible marriages in the freeBMD. I have no idea if my Lily had any middle name.
Marriages Dec 1895 Callow Lillie Gertrude Honiton 5b 33 Callow Lily Gertrude Honiton 5b 33 Clarke Bertha Hannah Honiton 5b 33 Fayter John Honiton 5b 33 Steer William Honiton 5b 33
Marriages Mar 1902 Matthews Samuel Honiton 5b 33 Rowe Lily Emma Honiton 5b 33
Marriages Jun 1912 Callow Lily Foxwell Leigh 8c 465 Foxwell Thomas Callow Leigh 8c 465
Thank you very much. BD

Hi BD
First elimination is Willam STEER marriage. He is on the 1901 in Honiton as STEAR with wife Bertha (funnily enough they have a 4 yr old named Lillie!)
I'm looking - but can't yet find John FAYTER and wife Lily/lillie.....but I think that could well be her? The only Lil* CALLOW registered Devon 1870-1880 is Lily Gertrude CALLOW in Honiton Dec Qtr 1877.

Hi There is a death for a Lily Callow in 1893 Q1 b. c.1879 in Bridgwater Somerset & I can't find anyone of that name in the 1891 for Bridgwater. Is that a possibility or do you have her past this date? Jacqui

The Fayter marriage looks promising, thank you.
I found some possible births for them as well.
Dec Q 1902 Honiton Fayter Lillie 5b 15 Fayter Rose 5b 16
Mar Q 1906 Honiton Fayter Edith Maud 5b 14
Mar Q 1911 Honiton Fayter Jack 5b 15
Lillie is probably the right one as she would be named after her mother. Rose is a common name, but she is registered on a different page so she might be a cousin. Jack is short for John, so he might be their child as well.

Hi All
Well done Kris Finding them in 1901!
BD Both the babes, Lillie and Rose, died shortly after birth - their deaths are also registered Dec Qtr 1902: Lillie 5b, pg 10 Rose 5b, pg 11
John FAYTER - this looks like him in 1891:
1891: Village of Newton Poppleford, Aylesbeare, Devon RG12;/Piece: 1677/ Folio 24/ pg2 Head: John FAYTER 55, Shoemaker, b Ottery St Mary Wife: Louisa FAYTER 55, b Aylesbeare Son: John FAYTER 32, unm, Shoemaker, b Newton Poppleford Son: Charles FAYTER 26, unm, Wheelwright, b Aylesbeare Son: Thomas FAYTER 21, unm, Farm Labourer, b Aylesbeare Dau: Annie FAYTER 19, unm, Dressmaker, b Aylesbeare Son: Fred FAYTER 14, Farm Labourer, b Aylesbeare Dau : Polly FAYTER 11, Scholar, b Aylesbeare Son: Samuel FAYTER 9, Scholar, b Aylesbeare
And there are website Trees with that family (incl 2 examples off World Connect, but there are more) http://people.aapt.net.au/~hughedwards/467.htm http://wc.rootsweb.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=GET&db=:3191564&id=I624229517 http://wc.rootsweb.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=GET&db=celia280450&id=I500
Ancestry, also has a least 3 seperate trees in their Public Trees section (but one has to be a subscriber to see them): All seem to have John dying in 1914, and I saw one listed his wife "Annie" as being born 1860 - but that may be a guess, in assuming "Annie" was around the same age as her husband.
I sawsome of these earlier on, but what put me off was the wife as "Annie". No surname nor dates for Annie, no children - so in hindsight, possibly, the "Annie" was all the present family recalled, incorrectly, as being his wife's name......?
This website may be about his brother, Charles? http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~kiwiadams/2/44098.html
