Topic: *SOLUTION* Ancestry website freezing Internet Explorer (Read 898 times)

For a couple of weeks I have been plagued by Microsoft Internet Explorer freezing when viewing census images on Ancestry.co.uk, , or when returning from image viewing, back to the main site. This problem even manifested itself on a completely new-build PC which had only just had Windows XP installed, so I know that it probably wasn't a virus at work, or program corruption.
After 2 weeks of head-scratching and tearing out of hair, I found the culprit....... Norton Internet Security 2008 ! 
Fortunately, you don't have to remove NIS to cure the problem, just go into Internet Explorer Tools (the icon with the cogged wheel on the tool bars), then select Manage Add-ons then Enable or Disable Add-ons......
...... then find the addons which mention Norton or Symantec, and disable them. The problem should go away. 
P.S. I use Internet Explorer 7 - I not sure if this affects IE6.

had a look, cos been having problem of freezing also, not that I have Norton, but cant see anything with that in it.......................any other ideas!

The only other thing I can think of is that the Ancestry site relies heavily on Java scripting. Make sure that you have the latest version of Java, which you can get for free at http://www.java.com and make sure you have scripting switched on in your Internet Explorer settings. You can best do that by going into Internet Options, and setting your security level to "Medium-High" (if that doesn't work, try the Medium setting).

A friend was having trouble with I.E. after he had just down loaded the Adobe Reader 8 upgrade. After uninstalling the old Adobe 7 and 8 he reloaded 8 and everything works OK now. He was getting messages in I.E> that it needed to close down

Hi,
Just logged on to see if anyone else was having problems with Ancestry lately.
It was working fine up until about last Friday/Saturday. I noticed that they were 'improving' their website, and invited people to take a tour/ or try out the new version.
I gave this a go............... big mistake. Ever since, even after switching back to the old version, I have been unable to view an image.
My browser keeps switching between a page with 'Enhanced Image Viewer Install' (Which is already installed), and Browse/ install_x.aspx.
I have contacted Ancestry for help but to no avail.
Thus today my husband cancelled our subscription.
Anyone else having these problems?
P.s. I'm operating on Windows XP and AOL.

I can't tell you how many times I have tried to install the Enhanced Viewer.
I follow the very simple instructions... starting with clicking on download... I get a totally different set of boxes come up than the example they show. I have tried to run it...save it... save it then run it.....either way I get a time slide or whatever that is called.....which shows it as downloading. It then tells me it was successfully downloaded but when I try to use it I get a notice that it is not installed on my computer.
I then do a search to find where the little rascal is on my computer....and it really isn't there. I give up !!

Ancestry aren't the quickest people in the world to solve problems, as many have already demonstrated. When I got a new laptop about a year ago, I tried to install the enhanced viewer on it, and it wouldn't work, because at the time it wasn't Vista compatible (it is now). Anyway, I think I spoke too soon about Norton being the sole culprit - yesterday I noticed that the viewer was still locking up Internet Explorer occasionally, so now I'm back to using the basic one ! Actually, the "enhanced" one isn't much better anyway !
If you are having problems loading the enhanced viewer - I've also had this problem - one possible solution involves clearing out your cookies on Internet Explorer, because Ancestry know whether you have the enhanced viewer because the information is stored on a cookie on your PC. Note that if you clear cookies, you will lose all your automatic site logins, so make sure you can remember all your site passwords before you clear them

Thanks for the tip Nick........but I tried that and cookies or not it still won't load..even though it tells me it has...then very quickly when I try to use it tells me it hasn't 
It's good to know tho that it isn't much better than the basic one....

Hi,
I don't know why Ancestry is trying to install the Enhanced image viewer anyway. I already had it up and running.
I don't have Norton.
It definately seems to have started when I tried out the new layout.

Hi,
I've had a break through!
I've managed to get Ancestry up & running again.
If any one has similar problems and is on AOL v. 9.0 + win XP this is how I did it:
Find the Temporary internet files by Clicking the settings button on the tool bar (the little square with a tick on it). Then click the tab labelled 'By category' then Internet web options. Under the browse history section click the settings button. then 'view files'. This then takes a minute whilst the computer generates the list.
The next stage is to locate the Ancestry cookies in the file. If your list is large, the easiest way of doing this is to press the keys control & F together. On the left hand side of the window it will ask "What do you want to search for?" Click 'All files & Folders'. In the next window type in Ancestry in the 1st box (All or part of file name). Then click Enter.
After a minute it will come back with the items in this folder that have anything to do with Ancestry. I found the Ancestry cookies right at the bottom of the page.
These I deleted, but as stated before, make a note of your username & password.
Worked for me...................... Good Luck
