Hi List,
I was wondering if someone had access to the 1901 Census for Greenock? The family was possibly living at 15 Finnart Street.
I'm looking for James Grant BISSET, wife Jennie (or Janet) abt 34, with possible children: Jessie 18 (daug from first marriage), son 5, David 4, and x2 daughters aged abt 2 and 1.
many thanks in advance
Libby

Sorry folks, would it possible to find James in 1891 Census?
First wife died in 1889, so James is probably with daughters: Jessie, Margaret (abt and Catherine (abt 6). More than likely, he'll be at the same address.
many thanks

1891 census the family named horseman are only neighbours to James Bisset He is on the census with Cohburn and Catherine and Ann McClement who is down as servant so I guess she is employed by James to look after the girls if you send me a pm with your email address I will send you the copy of the cert Elaine

OK. What I have worked out so far is:
James G BISSET's first wife was Catherine Mary McAulay DONALDSON. Details of Catherine's death from the Watt Library lists: Catherine McCulloch, wife of James G. Bisset, carver, died at 14 Ardgowan Street, Greenock on 14th April 1889. Her birth is listed on IGI as Mary Catherine DONALDSON, 24 Dec 1864 in Lanark. Parents listed as James DONALDSON and Mary Paterson ALLAN. A younger sister, Margaret McAulay DONALDSON was born in 1863.
When searching for McCulloch, McAulay was an alternative spelling.
Mary Paterson DONALDSON (nee ALLAN) married John HORSMAN 6 Sep 1870 in Lanark. Their son Edward HORSMAN (who appears with Mary P in 1881 and 1891) was born 27 AUG 1872 in Dunbarton (also on IGI). Parents listed as John HORSMAN and Mary Paterson ALLAN.
I would also think the Francis L Donaldson in the 1891 Census with the Bisset's and Horsman's is somehow related to Mary P.
I haven't placed Catherine Mary (or Mary Catherine DONALDSON) in 1871 or 1881 Census yet either. I guess it's possible that Catherine was Margaret McAulay DONALDSON and dropped the Margaret and used Catherine!?
I have also placed the Robert Donaldson in 1871 with the Hersman's as being the son of Mary Paterson ALLAN. He was born 25 Mar 1859 in Lanark.
What do you think Pam? It all seems to fit to me.

I know children were sometimes living with other family members but not sure about the girl/s as they would have only been about 6-8 years old.
Catherine/Mary/Margaret's mother was Mary Paterson ALLAN, but she had married HORSMAN in 1870, so I don't think the above family is correct. The grandmother's name was Margaret (not Mary) and different spelling of ALLAN/ALLEN (but realise this happens).
This is not a direct line so maybe I'll chew it over for a while and see if I can find out anything else.
Thank you very much for your input.
