Missing wife
« on: Monday 28 April 08 14:23 BST (UK) »

Harry Muggleton born 11th June 1867, Leicester (parents Stephen and Elizabeth Muggleton).
Harry joined the navy in 1883 as a boy sailor. He is recorded as being on board HMS Karrakatta on the 1891 census (Sheerness) and on board HMS Pembroke 1 (Chatham) on the 1901 census. He is shown on both censuses as being married, but I can find no record of his wife (or children).
I believe that he later married Edith Margaret Wallett, but she was too young to be married in 1881 (born 1879) and was still single in 1901.
I have checked Free BMD.
Has anyone any suggestions?

Hi

Have you thought of looking at his Navy records, they may give a next of kin.

Thanks - yes I have a copy of his naval record, but it does not give his next of kin. He joined the service at the age of 16. I would assume that this was before he married.

put all details into Ancestry - he was born in Tewksbury but lived in leics until joined navy. have found a marriage:

Harry Charles Muggleton June Q 1888 Portsea island, Hampshire
2a / 853

Location would fit in with naval career i think. also tie in with being married by 1891 census.

on board HMS Pembroke 1 (Chatham) on the 1901 census.

Pembroke 1 is Chatham navy Barracks. He may have been there awaiting another ship or during a refit. Pete

Thanks Pete.
Harry spent several periods of time aboard Pembroke 1 during his naval career.
At the time of the 1901 census he was there from 21st March to 19th May.

Thanks for taking the trouble Diddy. It's always reassuring when more than one person comes to the same conclusion.
