Missing wife « on: Monday 28 April 08 14:25 BST (UK) »
Harry Muggleton born 11th June 1867, Leicester (parents Stephen and Elizabeth Muggleton). Harry joined the navy in 1883 as a boy sailor. He is recorded as being on board HMS Karrakatta on the 1891 census (Sheerness) and on board HMS Pembroke 1 (Chatham) on the 1901 census. He is shown on both censuses as being married, but I can find no record of his wife (or children). I believe that he later married Edith Margaret Wallett, but she was too young to be married in 1881 (born 1879) and was still single in 1901. I have checked Free BMD. Has anyone any suggestions?

Hi Tofgem
Have you confirmed his date of birth and forename of "Harry" from birth certificate and/or baptism only I couldn't see a Harry or Henry MUGGLETON birth registered in the June or September quarters of 1867 .............. there was a Charles Humphrey registered in Leicester though

Looking at the 1901 census ...............
47 Chester Street, Leicester
Elizabeth MUGGLETON head wid 66 laundress b.Tewkesbury amongst the rest of the family is ............ Ernest MUGGLETON grandson 3 b.Chatham Kent Edith M WALLETT visitor unm 23 barmaid b.Brighton Sussex
RG13/2992 folio 134 page 22
Do we think that Ernest could be the son of "Harry"?
Ernest Stephen MUGGLETON birth registered March quarter 1898 Medway registration district ref. 2a 612. The parish registers for Chatham are online http://www.rootschat.com/links/0bl/ - it might be worth ploughing through them to see if you can find Ernest's baptism and thus names for his parents.

In 1871 Harry's birth place is down as Tewkesbury and his middle initial is C.
Birth 1868 MUGGLETON, Harry Charles, Tewkesbury, June, 6a, 439
Marriage 1888 MUGGLETON, Harry Charles, June Portsea, 2b, 853. possible spouse Rosetta CUELL or Margaret Isabel JACKSON
Portsea fits for a naval man, but I have not found either Rosetta or Isabel in the census.

Thanks a lot. The name Harry appears on the census and on his naval record. I must admit that I have not bought the birth certificate. The Tewkesbury connection comes from his mother who was born in Tewkesbury (his naval record gives Leicester as being his place of birth as do the censuses of 1881 and 1901 whereas the censuses of 1871 and 1901 give Tewkesbury as the place of birth - I'll just have to buy his birth certificate to find out where he was born. I had just come to the conclusion that Ernest born Chatham might be Harry's son and it is pleasing that some-one else thinks in the same way. I am amazed that you have found his first wife so quickly - I will now try to find out what happened to her. Thank you so much for your help. It is verymuch appreciated. Tofgem
