NZ BMD Certs, area now needed???

Hi Chatters,

I applied for 3 Marriage certs. through a Transcription Agent in Sydney on 26th March and have been informed last week that the certs. have not been processed as there was no area of marriage provided.

I thought all you had to provide was year of marriage and folio ref. no. Huh

I was a little suspicious of the agents info., so rang Wellington BMD and was informed that recently there were changes and YES you do have to provide an exact area or up to 3 districts!! to search.

I really do not know what is going on, and any info anyone can provide would be appreciated.

Hi Lu,

I have spoken to the Transcription Agent, he is perplexed as me. I had provided the correct details ( he checked the micro-fiche to be sure).

He is contacting NZ BMD today and ringing me back. Hopefully this will be sorted out today.

Wil let you know what the outcome is.

Yesterday I made two separate phonecalls to BDM here.
I remain gobsmacked at their stupidity ! Roll Eyes

Yes, they have a newly-instituted policy which requires "place of marriage" to be stated when ordering a certificate or printout. (The policy, apparently borne-out of complaints received at search fees being charged, when BDM have been unable to find a marriage record) ! Roll Eyes

BUT ... the utterly ridiculous aspect is, that there is NO publicly available (or searchable) index, which actually gives information on where a marriage took place !!

Somehow NZ BDM seem not yet, to have grasped this fact !

I can't see how they can compel you to give information which is not realistically obtainable ?

And were it me ordering some certs. and being presented with this "dilemma" ..... I would be giving BMD a very BIG "SERVE" ! Grin

After all, the old system of just providing them with the info which appears on the NZ Marriage Index, has always worked perfectly well in the past !

Best of luck Trish .... do hope after all this unnecessary nonsense, that you get your long-awaited certs, quick-smart !

Still have not heard anything from Agent. I will ring him later this afternoon.

This whole mess is ABSOLUTELY incredible!!!

After all the help I had from people including Riley, MK2 and Anthea in finding the Folio no's. for me, I can't get the certs.

Yes, they do deserve a walloping.

I am actually a NZ expat after growing up in Hamilton.

New Zealand Govt Departments totally amaze me - another one has reached IRD's level

If they want three districts listed how about ...
North Island, South Island and an island near you - mine being Centre Island.

If you pick the wrong three districts do you wave your 20 bucks goodbye??? and have to pay for a search fee!!!!!! sounds like another tax.

On a more serious note another Chatter has contacted me by P.M. and they got a different response from the person they spoke to at BMD.
They were told nothing has changed!!! A totally different response to Lucy2 and my enquiries.

Most interesting news Trish. Perhaps BDM have now "seen the light" and reverted to their "usual" policy ?
[When I phoned, I certainly didn't hold back on telling
them how pathetic they were ! The got "both barrels", "both times" !]
