Is it possible..
« on: Monday 28 April 08 17:18 BST (UK) »

I have very carefully, with help, traced back to Thomas West born 1774 in West Wycombe.  Is it possible to find his parents?  I have looked everywhere I can think of but, I've probably missed somewhere obvious!

He married a Jane Goodchild in 1794 and had 5 children.  Not sure what to do now - any suggestions gratefully received.

There is a Thomas West baptised 16th Oct 1768 in West Wycombe. How sure are you of the dates? His parents are listed as William and Mary West. Listed on Mormon website IGI.

Hi, thanks for getting back to me.  I've carefully worked backwards and I eventually found his marriage to Jane, but am always willing to double check.  thanks again.

Hi and thanks for the suggestion. The problem is, the trees I am researching are scattered in Bucks, Kent, Scotland, Cheshire, Lancashire and Canada so I seem to be here there and everywhere and couldn't afford to subscribe to them all.  I understand what you mean though and I am grateful for the thought.  Regards.

That's fine.
Bucks is about £10 for a year and good value for money.
I'm scattered all over the place, but only belong to Bucks and Hants.

I see from the IGI that the marriage was in West Wycombe - where were the 5 children baptised and what were their names?

Marriages are often in the bride's parish but the place of baptism for the children should show where Thomas was from.

Where did you get the info from that told you Thomas was from W Wycombe and was born in 1774? If from the 1841 census, don't forget ages were not exact so Karen's 1768 suggestion could well be him.

Hi Jillruss and thank you for getting back to me.  I have recently had contact from a cousin who has pointed me in the right direction - hopefully!  He had traced our family back to James (1806) who was one of Thomas's sons.  The other children were John 1796, Anne 1799, William 1803, and Charles 1811.  All baptised in West Wycombe.  From this I gleaned the marriage between Thomas and Jane (Goodchild) Most of my research has been done on the IGI etc. and I know I have to be careful.  I have spoken to and emailed the archivists in that area re obtaining the marriage certificate but have not heard back from them as yet.  I guess when I eventually receive it, this will give me his date of birth.

Any more advice would be gratefully received.  Thanks again.

I didn't think marriage certificates came in until 1837... before then you just had the reference in the Parish Register....

Hi again, you wouldn't believe it would you?  I came back from shopping and there was a letter from the Archivist on the doormat!  You're quite right about the forms - I have the microfilmed copy of the marriage but no dates of birth etc.  Still, its good to see their names and their marks!  Will have to persevere I guess.  Thanks again.
